18 rated films, videos and downloads can contain very strong material which is only suitable for adults. This can include very strong language, horror, and violence.
The main difference between a 15 and an 18 rated film is the level of graphic or explicit detail shown, for example, if a film contains violence in a 15, a character may get hurt, but his injuries won't be shown in graphic detail, compared to an 18 film.
Content suitable only for adults ages 18 and up. May include prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content and/or gambling with real currency.
G: Appropriate for people of all ages. PG 12: Parental guidance is required for children under the age of 12. R 15+: People aged 15 and above will be admitted. ID is required to confirm your age. R 18+: People aged 18 and above will be admitted.
No one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema.
Rated G: Suggested for general audiences. Rated M: Suggested for mature audiences - Parental discretion advised. Rated R: Restricted – Persons under 16 not admitted, unless accompanied by parent or adult guardian. Rated X: Persons under 16 not admitted.
Other than the obvious age definition: 21+ is explicit while 18+ is just descriptive.
There are legal age restrictions for the ratings of MA 15+ and R 18+. X 18+ is a special restriction rating for adult content. X 18+ is limited only to films, and the highest rating for video games remains R 18+.
Definitions of a child
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) defines a child as everyone under 18 unless, "under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier".
Films classified 15A have been deemed appropriate for viewers of fifteen and over. However, they can also be seen by younger children - provided they are accompanied by an adult who has deemed the film appropriate viewing for that child.
Our staff are legally required to ask for proof that you are old enough to watch an age restricted film if they have any doubt. In order to prove your age we require official I.D. that includes a photo and date of birth such as a passport or driver's license. (We accept photocopies of passports.
18 - No-one younger than 18 may see an '18' film in a cinema. Q) HOW DO I VERIFY MY AGE? Due to legal requirements, we need to ensure that all guests are of the required legal age to watch a film, as per the certificates below. As a result, you may need valid photo identification with you showing your date of birth.
As per the MPAA's film rating policy, patrons under the age of 17 will require an accompanying parent or guardian to attend an "R" rated film.
No-one younger than 18 may see an '18' film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an '18' rated video. Films rated R18 are to be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults of not less than 18 years.
R - Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. Contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.
Restricted (R 18+)
A person may be asked for proof of their age before purchasing, hiring or viewing R 18+ films and computer games at a retail store or cinema.
This rating just simply signals that the content is appropriate only for an adult audience (ages 18 and above). The majority of films rated NC-17 receive this rating due to their explicit sexual content.
Mature (M) - Not recommended for children under 15.
Equivalent to PG-13 for movies, T for video games, and low TV-14 for television.
As far as I can see, the number of mainstream 18 releases this year have been few and far between. Most are horror pictures – Midsommar, Ready or Not – but there's also an action picture (Rambo: Last Blood) and an auteur picture (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
The UAE ends censorship of movie screenings by officially introducing a rating for cinema audiences aged 21 and above. This means that titles released with the 21+ classification will not be edited or cut, as was the case before. The announcement was made by the country's Media Regulatory Office.
TV-MA is worse than R because it contains both R and NC-17-rated material. What is this? R is OK for viewers under 17 as long as they're accompanied by an adult, but TV-MA is never appropriate for viewers under 18. Only adults are permitted to watch TV-MA.
18A – 18 Accompaniment – Persons under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Additionally, admittance restricted to people 14 years of age or older in the Maritimes and Manitoba. R – Restricted – Admittance restricted to people 18 years of age or older.
The R-rating doesn't ban children under 17 from a movie, it restricts them to watching it with a parent or guardian (and includes a recommendation that parents and guardians learn more before allowing their child to see the movie).
