Drink Alcohol, Use Drugs, or Smoke. It's never advisable to drink alcohol excessively, smoke, or take drugs, whether you are pregnant or not. When you are pregnant, doing so exposes your unborn babies to toxic substances, raising their risk of birth defects and chronic illnesses.
Mums-to-be of twins usually start their maternity leave at 26 weeks. But it will also depend on your health, how well your pregnancy is going, and the type of work you do. Talk to your line manager or HR department if you need to leave earlier than 26 weeks, if, for example, you have complications with your pregnancy.
Eat well, take gentle exercise, drink lots of fluid and, if you feel stressed, ask for support from friends and family, or talk to your midwife or doctor. Some people think that if you are pregnant with twins, you need a lot of extra food. That's not true.
Sleep is a necessity — especially when you're pregnant! In answer to the question, “How many hours should a pregnant woman sleep?” most doctors recommend eight to 10 hours per night.
Women with twin pregnancies are more likely to have pregnancy health problems and complications like gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, premature labour and bleeding. Twins who share a placenta might have extra complications.
If you're expecting twins or higher-order multiples, you could also possibly start to show before the end of your first trimester. Your uterus must grow larger to accommodate more than one baby. So whereas someone expecting a singleton may not show until after 3 or 4 months, you might show as early as 6 weeks.
The risk is highest in the first trimester, although it drops significantly once a fetal heartbeat is established, Roshan says. A 2003 study shows that the risk for twin miscarriage once the babies' heart beats are detected is around 7 percent.
Bed rest during a multiple pregnancy is sometimes used as a way to prevent complications,1 but it is not a requirement for all twin pregnancies. If everything progresses normally during your twin pregnancy, you may not require bed rest.
Extreme tiredness
While it's normal to feel tired when you're pregnant, women carrying twins are more likely to experience extreme tiredness or exhaustion as they adapt to being pregnant with two growing babies, and your body has to adjust to increased energy requirements.
A little more than half of twin pregnancies end in preterm delivery (before 37 weeks). While 40 weeks is the full gestation period of the average pregnancy, most twin pregnancies are delivered at approximately 36 weeks (range 32-38 weeks depending on the type of twin pregnancy).
Keeping them together and on the same routine helps life run smoothly. This makes alone time all the more important for twins. They can play and just focus on themselves, no one bothering them. If you have a more introverted twin they might relish the break in external stimuli.
The average length of pregnancy for twins is 36.4 weeks. Babies who are born between 32 weeks and 37 weeks generally do very well. If your babies are born early, they are likely to be fine, but they may need to spend time at the special care baby unit (SCBU) or the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
How early can you have twins? Twins can be born much earlier than a normal, singleton baby. It's possible to deliver twins after less than 25 weeks of pregnancy.
People over 30, and particularly those over age 35, are more likely to conceive twins. 4 This is because the level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) rises as birthing parents get older. FSH is responsible for the development of eggs in the ovaries before they are released.
You're not entitled to extra maternity or paternity benefits if you're expecting twins or multiple babies. Your entitlements to leave and pay are the same as if you were expecting one baby. But you can claim Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit for each of your children.
For twins, the average stay is nine to 25 days. For triplets it's 11 days to up to three months.
You ideally want to plan for your twin baby shower near the end of the second trimester; maybe somewhere around 26 to 28 weeks. You definitely want to have it by 30 to 31 weeks at the latest, because you want to get that baby shower out of the way before Mom's on bed rest, before the twins arrive early.
Missionary Position
The man-on-top position helps the sperm to enter the egg easily, and it is the best sex position to produce twins.
Most miscarriages occur before the 12th week of pregnancy. Signs and symptoms of a miscarriage might include: Vaginal spotting or bleeding. Pain or cramping in your abdomen or lower back.
For women who know they're pregnant, about 10 to 15 in 100 pregnancies (10 to 15 percent) end in miscarriage. Most miscarriages happen in the first trimester before the 12th week of pregnancy. Miscarriage in the second trimester (between 13 and 19 weeks) happens in 1 to 5 in 100 (1 to 5 percent) pregnancies.
"The average weight gain is 25 pounds for singleton pregnancy and 30-35 pounds for twins. We don't want moms pregnant with twins to gain more than 40 [pounds] or less than 15 pounds."
