You may eat as tolerated after the numbness has worn off. Avoid sticky, hard (such as ice cubes, nuts, popcorn, chips), brittle, spicy, highly seasoned, or acidic foods in your diet.
Avoid sharp or crunch foods, like nuts and popcorn, for at least 24 hours post-treatment. Avoid hot foods and beverages, like hot soup or hot coffee, for about 48 hours post-treatment.
In fact, you don't have to wait at all! That's right, you can eat right after a dental cleaning. You just might not want to eat anything. Dental cleaning can cause your teeth and gums to be sensitive.
You can eat as soon as you feel ready to do so. But this is if you only had a deep dental cleaning. If your dentist did a cleaning and a fluoride treatment, you'll have to wait for at least thirty minutes. Fluoride treatments are often done to help make your teeth stronger.
Any food or drink that is high in acid like tomatoes, citrus fruits, pickles, fruit juice and red wine are harsh on your mouth after a deep dental cleaning. Spicy and heavily seasoned foods may also cause your mouth some discomfort. Foods like hamburgers will cause you to open your mouth wider.
Minor bleeding, such as a pinkish tinge to your saliva, may occur during the first 48 hours following surgery. Avoid extremely hot foods for the rest of the day and do NOT rinse out your mouth, as these will often prolong the bleeding.
You should ideally wait at least an hour before drinking coffee after a teeth cleaning, but if you want your teeth to stay bright as long as possible, it may be worth waiting as much as four hours to allow your teeth sufficient time to heal.
When anesthetic has been used, your lips, teeth, and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing until the numbness has completely worn off. Wait at least two hours before eating, and then select a soft diet for the first 48-72 hours, chewing on the opposite side of your mouth.
EATING AND DRINKING: Do not try to eat until all the anesthesia (numbness) has worn off. Your first meal should be soft. Avoid spicy, salty, acidic, very hot or very cold foods or liquids. Also, avoid nuts, chips, popcorn, hard bread, or other crunchy or fibrous foods which may become caught between your teeth.
After scaling and root planing is completed, you may experience slight discomfort around the teeth for several days and increased sensitivity to hot and cold (and sometimes sweets) for up to four to six weeks duration. This is a normal course of healing.
After they remove the buildup, your teeth can feel loose and like they are more likely to fall out. Despite that feeling of looseness, removing this buildup helps your gums and roots reattach to your teeth, increasing the chances they will be part of your smile in the longterm.

Three to five days after your last root scaling treatment, both bleeding and discomfort will start to abate.
Minor bleeding and swelling may occur, but this should subside after a few days. Other risks include issues with gum reattachment, gum recession, or nerve damage. These side effects are rare, and most patients have no issues after their treatment. The most common side effect is pain and sensitivity after the procedure.
The usual gaps present between the teeth gets filled with deposits ,which after removal by scaling gives an effect of increased gap. These gaps will disappear once the inflamed gum tissues become normal and grow back to their original positions.
Do gums grow back after scaling? After scaling, the gums may appear to grow back in some cases, but they do not truly regenerate.
That said, ice cream is the perfect dessert to have after dental work. This is because the cold helps to soothe pain and minimize any swelling that might be occurring. Plus, it is soft, so you do not have to chew it at all!
In some instances, a dense buildup of hard tartar “splints” teeth together, concealing the extent of bone loss and creating the illusion of stability. When this buildup is removed, any existing looseness may become more noticeable. As a result, teeth may feel loose following a deep cleaning.
Plaque formation on the teeth is a continuous process. If this is not removed by brushing it starts mineralizing into tartar within 10-14 hours. Such persons may require periodic scaling, every 6 months or so. The golden rule is to have a routine dental check up every 6 months.
Scaling and root planing is also known as deep teeth cleaning. During this non-surgical restorative dental procedure, your dentist will remove plaque and tartar below and above the gum line. Scaling can be done manually or using an ultrasonic or a laser instrument.
Following a deep cleaning, your teeth may be more sensitive than usual. This can last for up to several weeks. You may also experience some slight swelling or bruising.
It is recommended you do not have anything to eat or drink (except for water) at least 5 hours before your scheduled appointment. This will prevent food debris from lodging in your teeth, which can irritate you during a cleaning and give your dentist a little extra work to do.
If you do decide to receive fluoride as a preventative measure, it should be understood that you would need to wait at least 30 minutes after the cleaning to eat or drink. This goes for any food or drink! For example, refrain from any snacks, sodas, sweet tea, coffee, etc.
But you might be curious about what you should be doing after the cleaning is complete. We recommend you avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 30 – 60 minutes after your cleaning. The timing should be enough to ensure your teeth can recover from the procedure and keep from feeling sensitive.
To ease your discomfort and to ensure there aren't any complications during the healing process, it's best to follow a few aftercare tips: Avoid chewing or eating until any anesthesia has worn off. Consume a soft diet for 48 hours. Don't smoke or drink alcohol for at least 72 hours.
Patients usually have some mild to moderate pain and sensitivity for the first day or two, along with a small amount of bleeding. Within a week the gums will start to heal and reattach to the roots of the teeth. The initial discomfort should be gone.
