Their brain test project showed: 41% of earch-dwellers are left-brained, while only 27% are right-brained. In 32% of participants, the two hemispheres exert equal influence on thinking. (Source: Sommer+Sommer, n=35.345. 657 people from 205 countries.)
October 6, 2013. The left and right hemispheres of Albert Einstein's brain were unusually well connected to each other and this may have contributed to his brilliance, according to a new study [1], the first to detail Einstein's corpus callosum.
It's still true that language is left-oriented and emotions are right-oriented. It's also true that the lobes of the brain have specific jobs. But no evidence suggests that a person's left or right brain is stronger than the other. It's all about the neural connections.
Ninety-five percent of the human population is left-brain dominant, and those people tend to be right-handed. The dominant side of your brain is where your speech and language center is located.
Right-brainers can be disorganised, unpredictable and more often than not, very good with people. They are spontaneous, creative and more emotional than left-brainers, often pondering and acting on their feelings. They are intuitive, good at problem solving and more comfortable with the unknown.
Those with a right hemisphere deficiency often have poor attention spans and behavioural problems. They often have low muscle tone in the large muscles and are therefore uncoordinated and not great at sports.
Hemisphere Specialization
The human brain is divided into two hemispheres that, although structurally similar, are functionally quite different. Joseph (1988) reported converging evidence that the right hemisphere is relatively more active in REM sleep, during which dreams most often occur.
So what are so-called "right-brained people" like? They are often described as being more emotional, intuitive, and creative. They are often described as doing well in careers that involve creative expression and free-thinking, such as becoming an artist, psychologist, or writer.
Their brain test project showed: 41% of earch-dwellers are left-brained, while only 27% are right-brained. In 32% of participants, the two hemispheres exert equal influence on thinking. (Source: Sommer+Sommer, n=35.345. 657 people from 205 countries.)
The ability to use right-brain creativity and left brain logic simultaneously may have been what made Einstein a genius. The part of the brain that connects the two hemispheres of the brain is called the corpus callosum.
Right Brain Left Brain
While it's true that certain mental processes tend to occur in either the right or left hemisphere of the brain, research into the topic has found no evidence that people have stronger networks on one side of the brain or the other.
But this does not justify the pop psychology concept of “left-brained” or “right-brained.” The two hemispheres are different, yet brain imaging technologies like functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) suggest that, on average, we use both sides of our brain equally. We are all “brain-ambidextrous.”
The left brain is more verbal, analytical, and orderly than the right brain. It's sometimes called the digital brain. It's better at things like reading, writing, and computations.
A few interesting research studies show that people who have an IQ above an average level use different regions of the brain while solving tasks than people with average IQ scores.
Innovators. Billionaire Bill Gates and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg are left-handers.
In general, schools tend to favor left-brain modes of thinking, while downplaying the right-brain ones. Left-brain scholastic subjects focus on logical thinking, analysis, and accuracy. Right-brained subjects, on the other hand, focus on aesthetics, feeling, and creativity.
Doctors can be right-brained! Doctors are often considered people who use their left brain more than their right brain. The left brain is associated with logical and analytical thinking. However, the right brain is associated with artistic and creative abilities.
Right-brained learners are creative, inventive, imaginative, and often gifted in the arts, music, or sports. They have the ability to learn instantly and visually when they have access to images, graphs, maps, and organizers of information.
Engineers tend to be the left-brained type, using math, science, logic, and visualization to fully understand the constructability and feasibility of an architect's design.
Traits of the Right Hemisphere of the Brain
Creative kids tend to be right-brained, and when in learning situations they prefer to: Be shown rather than told how to do a task. Solve problems by looking at similarities and patterns. Draw rather than write.
Most studies show right hemisphere dominance in emotional and social processes. With regard to the theory of mind, empathy is dominantly supported by the right hemisphere. However, some findings suggest the involvement of both hemispheres in mentalization and perspective talking.
The brain works in asymmetrical patterns, and certain personality traits can be formed and developed by doing particular activities more than others. Activating your right brain through mental stimulation and activities has been shown to increase vitality and potentially generate new brain cells.
However, the part of the limbic system that's most active during sleep is the amygdala, which is most commonly associated with fear, aggression, and unpleasant emotions. The amygdala is why we experience nightmares.
Ordinary readers use left-brain systems, but dyslexic readers rely more on right brain areas.
