Introduction. Changelings are the closest that players will ever get to playing a doppelganger, gifted with the ability to change their appearance without relying on spells or on items like a disguise kit.
Changelings are not transformed by magic since its an innate ability, that doesn't use magic.
A Changeling makes a fantastic Bard, Paladin, Warlock, or Sorcerer. Really. They're good at all four classes. Bard Changelings benefit hugely from the +2 Charisma, augmenting their spellcasting, bardic inspiration, and talking skills.
Races & Adventurers
The Traveler is the patron of all those who welcome change, in body and in philosophy. Its worshipers include changelings, shifters, doppelgangers, and lycanthropes, who see it as the greatest of gods, but only doppelgangers and lycanthropes routinely revere it.
Changelings born from two changeling parents are born in their natural form: pale, slender, with colorless eyes and white hair.
Changelings don't inherently recognize each other. If they don't want to be recognized then when they do something suspicious it would be an insight check against the changelings deception, which the changeling has advantage on. A changeling could have expertise in insight from divergent persona.
As for being tattooed, changelings can definitely be tattooed, and they can just as easily erase the tattoo with a moment's thought.
The short version is that a Changeling can shapeshift to a form that can produce sperm to impregnate someone, and can shapeshift to a form with a uterus and eggs to get pregnant, but a pregnant Changeling cannot shapechange to a form without a uterus without ending the pregnancy.
Weaknesses. Connection to their mother – Killing a mother changeling will cause its children to die instantly. Fire – Setting a changeling on fire will kill it. Mirrors – A changeling's true form is revealed in a mirror.
A changeling is typically identifiable via a number of traits; in Irish legend, a fairy child may appear sickly and will not grow in size like a normal child, and may have notable physical characteristics such as a beard or long teeth.
Changelings are thought to be an uncommon race—though their true demographics remain unknown, as may live their entire lives masking as other sentient races. Many places in the world fear changelings for their unique ability to assume the form, or 'profile', of nearly any person, indefinitely.
The true form of a changeling is a bit paler than a typical human with slightly elongated limbs. Their eyes are colorless and ringed by black as pictured in the artwork above by Julia Zhuravleva. They have no body hair, but the hair on their head can be platinum, white, or silver.
You can't increase or decrease the number of limbs you have, and their basic arrangement needs to be in roughly the same location on your body (2 near the head and 2 near the rear). So, you can't, become a winged demon or angel, as the wings of those forms are additional limbs.
Changeling is a keyword ability that gives creature cards all creature types simultaneously. It only appears on creatures with the “shapeshifter” creature type listed on the card itself.
A changeling can eliminate or add traditional physical disfigurements - such as scars or birthmarks - when changing shape.
Appearance. In their true form, or their form "at rest", changelings have pale skin, colorless eyes that can be completely white or completely black, and white or silver-white hair.
Unlike doppelgangers, which are entirely genderless, a changeling does have a default gender that manifests in adolescence, but each changeling can adapt his or her form to be of either gender, hermaphroditic (both genders simultaneously), or entirely genderless.
Changelings mature slightly faster than humans but share a similar lifespan—typically a century or less. While a changeling can transform to conceal their age, the effects of aging affect them similarly to humans.
Changelings were fairies who had been left in place of a human child or baby who had been stolen by the fairies. The child was taken for one of three reasons; to act as a servant, for the fairies to receive the love of a human child, or for malice/revenge.
changeling, in European folklore, a deformed or imbecilic offspring of fairies or elves substituted by them surreptitiously for a human infant. According to legend, the abducted human children are given to the devil or used to strengthen fairy stock.
Changelings have red blood like a majority of the other races. Bleeding around others may alert many that the Changeling is not of the same race (should the blood color vary). For this reason, a Changeling will usually choose to take the form of a race with red blood.
17. As a playable race, changelings have the following abilities: Shapechanger: Using an action they can change their appearance and voice at will, even adapting their size between small and medium in some cases.
Changelings need to sleep like everyone else after all and if they always reverted to their natural state when sleeping they would have one hell of a time staying hidden. A sleeping creature is considered unconscious in 5e at least.
