Average Recovery Times Total knee or hip replacement: 3 to 12 months. Lumbar spinal fusion: 3 to 6 months. Endonasal brain surgery, brain surgery performed through the nose: 3 to 4 months. Coronary artery bypass: 6 to 12 weeks.
An emergency exploratory laparotomy was the longest procedure among all analysed, with anesthesia duration of 980 minutes, that is, 4.2 times the mean, and the operation took 880 minutes – 5.7-fold the mean.
Depending on your state of health, it can be shorter or longer. An average time length that a lot of people say with an abdominal incision is about one to two months or even just six weeks to where you really want to let it heal and you try not to put too much pressure on your abdomen during that time.
The answer to that question is complex and almost always unique to the individual and the type of procedure taking place. There are many variables that determine how long recovery will last, ranging from a day to months before the patient feels like their presurgery self.
Facelift (two months)
The bruising and swelling from a facelift will take at least a couple of months before it goes down. You may feel that you need to stay at home during the first month since you will experience discomfort. Expect some numbness around the ears for at least two months as well.
Examples of major surgery include organ transplant, removal of a brain tumour, removal of a damaged kidney or open-heart surgery. The person will need to stay in hospital for some time. The risk of complications may be high and the person will take a longer time to recover.
Using age-matched groups, it was shown that surgically-interested individuals generally scored higher on extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, open-mindedness and lower on negative emotionality as related to the general public.
Procedures lasting > 120 minutes were considered “prolonged”.
Most dangerous emergency surgeries

The longest average recovery period we found was that of a total knee replacement, which can take from three months to one full year. This is typical with many knee injuries. An ACL injury, for example, can take six months or more to recover from.
In general, research has found that orthopedic surgeries, or those involving bones, are the most painful.
