Always have your cat evaluated by a veterinarian, even if she appears to be ok. Internal bleeding, shock, low blood pressure, traumatic brain injury or chest injuries can manifest hours after the initial injury, and a veterinarian will be able to determine if there are any hidden injuries to your cat.
Some cats that are hit by a car sadly do not survive to receive veterinary treatment. However, for those that do, the prognosis is perhaps better than you might think. In one study of 128 cats that were hit by a car, 112 were alive when they arrived at the vets. For these 112 cats the chance of survival was 84%.
If a vet asks you to bring the cat to them, splint or stabilize any visible injuries, if possible. Then, wrap the cat in a towel, making sure not to cover the cat's mouth or nose or wrap the towel too tight. Put the cat in a carrier or open container to reduce the risk of additional injuries.
As horrific as the idea is of hitting someone's pet whether it be a cat, dog or rabbit. You are not required legally to stop at the scene if you hit a cat… but if you do, and it has a chance of survival, the best thing you can do is: Move the animal to safety (if it can be moved) and ideally take it to the nearest vet.

If you've found an injured animal on the road

Under the Road Traffic Act (1988), you must report to police any collision with certain types of animal. This includes dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and mules. However, you don't legally have to report accidents involving other animals such as cats, badgers and foxes.
In over 70 percent of the 50 states, the most commonly hit animal on the road is the deer. From some of the most isolated states, like Alaska, to some of the sandiest, like Florida, deer lead as the top victim of motorists more than any other animal.

Overhead movements or certain noises may frighten an abused cat, triggering a long-term memory of prior trauma. It's possible your cat will carry that unpleasant memory for the rest of his life.
Also, cats are more likely to run into the road than dogs if they're spooked. Why do cats run in front of cars? Cats get scared easily. When felines hear a loud noise, or when they're being approached by a dog or a human stranger, they bolt.
Often, the hidden kitty taking a warm catnap can die when the engine starts. And if a cat gets caught in the moving parts, it isn't a pretty site. If kitty does survive the start-up of a car, it could fall off your moving vehicle and get seriously injured, according to Utah State University Extension.
Agonal breathing occurs as the body is dying and the pet has no consciousness of this and certainly does not feel like "he can't breathe". Most of the times, those are silent, but occasionally, breathing noises can accompany them.
Cats who are painful may withdraw from their usual family interactions, may become less engaged in their surroundings, and may start hiding. You may notice decreased eating and/or drinking. You may also notice changes in sleeping patterns. Some may sleep more, while others may sleep less.

Call the police and file a report.
In most states, pets are considered property, and if your property has been stolen, the police can be an essential line of defense in your pet's recovery.
If you run over a cat, you aren't required by law to tell the police. But although legally you don't need to do anything after hitting a cat with your car, you should make an effort to trace the cat's owner. If it is wearing a collar, this may have details of the pet's owner.
Animal cruelty involves gratuitously inflicting harm, injuring, or killing an animal. The cruelty can be intentional, such as kicking, burning, stabbing, beating, or shooting; or it can involve neglect, such as depriving an animal of water, shelter, food, and necessary medical treatment.
The local police, shire ranger or Department of Environment and Conservation ranger should be able to dispatch the animal safely and remove it from the road. If it's a smaller animal that you can pick up then you can wrap it up and take it to the local vet.
The vast majority of insurance claims for animal collisions involve kangaroos, with wallabies and wombats the next most frequent. Smaller animals often go unreported or unnoticed.
