A smart strategy is to put the money into a savings account and take some time to consider how you want to spend it. You may decide to treat yourself with a small part of it, but use the rest to pay down debt, boost your investments or simply keep saving.
Generally, money kept in a bank account is safe—even during a recession. However, depending on factors such as your balance amount and the type of account, your money might not be completely protected.

According to a study by Fidelity, people in their 40s should aim to have at least three times their annual salary saved by this point. So if yours is $50,000, then you should strive to have $150,000 saved. If possible, it's even better to aim for five times your annual salary saved by age 40.

Unless your bank has set a withdrawal limit of its own, you are free to take as much out of your bank account as you would like. It is, after all, your money. Here's the catch: If you withdraw $10,000 or more, it will trigger federal reporting requirements.
How much is too much? If you plan to deposit a large amount of cash, it may need to be reported to the government. Banks must report cash deposits totaling more than $10,000. Business owners are also responsible for reporting large cash payments of more than $10,000 to the IRS.
Despite the recent uncertainty, experts don't recommend withdrawing cash from your account. Keeping your money in financial institutions rather than in your home is safer, especially when the amount is insured. “It's not a time to pull your money out of the bank,” Silver said.
A $100,000 inheritance could be useful for very different purposes such as paying off debts, putting it into a high-yield savings account, or dumping it into a retirement account.
Some options might include paying down debt, building your emergency fund, investing, fund your retirement accounts, funding an HSA and more.
During the past 20 years, Australian inheritances have added up to almost $1.4 trillion — about $67 billion a year. The average inheritance is about $125,000 and goes to a recipient about 50 years old, who is usually well-established in their career.
Dave Ramsey, personal finance expert and founder of Ramsey Solutions, says this myth of primarily inherited riches is “flat wrong.” When Ramsey's National Study of Millionaires asked where the riches came from, they found that a whopping 79% didn't receive any inheritance from parents or other family members.
That said, an inheritance of $100,000 or more is generally considered large.
Retiring at 40 with $2 million is possible, though it is a lofty goal, especially if you don't have a large inheritance or some other windfall. But it can be done if your income is high sufficient and if you are aggressive with your savings strategy.
