Things in the environment, like ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, can make the skin less elastic. Gravity can cause skin to sag and wrinkle. Certain habits, like smoking, also can wrinkle the skin.
Responsible for 90 percent of visible changes to the skin, photoaging is a direct result of cumulative sun damage you've been exposed to throughout your life. “Premature aging of the skin is caused by light exposure,” says Melanie Palm, MD, Medical Director of Art of Skin MD in Solana Beach, California.
Exercise. The best way to slow down aging is to stay in great shape. One study published in Aging Cell found that older people who exercised regularly throughout their lives had the muscle mass, cholesterol levels, and even immune system function of much younger people.
There are social, mental, physiological, health, and activity factors that affect successful aging. Differences in these factors led to different opinions about successful aging [22.
It's hard to fight aging because it lies at the core of our genetic makeup. Short telomeres would be an obvious target for antiaging interventions. But people with very long telomeres—or more telomerase, an enzyme that keeps telomeres long—aren't always better off. Cancer cells can use telomerase to multiply unchecked.
Rather than a single dimensional concept, successful aging is a multidimensional concept, which encompasses physical, social, psychological, and spiritual aspects in addition to culture and environment [5,6].
Exposure to light is a top cause of premature aging: Sun exposure causes many skin problems. Ultraviolet (UV) light and exposure to sunlight age your skin more quickly than it would age naturally. The result is called photoaging, and it's responsible for 90% of visible changes to your skin.
Your skin changes with age. It becomes thinner, loses fat, and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did. Your veins and bones can be seen more easily. Scratches, cuts, or bumps can take longer to heal.
Physical function
Regular physical activity during the life span is a strong predictor of healthy ageing (30-33). Decrease of muscle mass and muscle strength are related to ageing processes, but also to chronic diseases and lifestyle (nutrition, physical inactivity) (31).
Following are the main Five Pillars of Ageing Well: nutrition, hydration, physical, social and cognitive stimulation.
But there's some good news: While the study confirms that stress can have an aging effect, it also shows that recovery can reverse it. The research was a collaboration of a number of schools, including Harvard Medical School and Duke University.
Researchers suggest that Werner syndrome is due to complete loss of function of the helicase protein encoded by the WRN gene. The specific function of the helicase protein in preventing premature aging remains unclear.
Next steps
Taking care of your physical, mental, and cognitive health is important for healthy aging. Even making small changes in your daily life can help you live longer and better. In general, you can support your physical health by staying active, eating and sleeping well, and going to the doctor regularly.
Successful aging is the process of growing older while maintaining physical health, cognitive abilities, and strong social relationships.
“Retinol and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) can rejuvenate the skin and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Patel says. “Hyaluronic acid helps your skin retain moisture, which gives it a smooth, glowing look.” Opt for serums and night creams with retinol and AHAs, and a daily face moisturizer with hyaluronic acid.
For example, the heart of a 20-year-old is capable of pumping about 10 times the amount of blood that is actually needed to keep the body alive. After age 30, an average of 1% of this reserve is lost each year.
