Carcinoid. Lung carcinoid tumors are uncommon and tend to grow slower than other types of lung cancers. They are made up of special kinds of cells called neuroendocrine cells. They are usually classified as typical or atypical carcinoids.
Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. It grows and spreads more slowly than small cell lung cancer.
Stage III (updated 12/2021)
Stage III lung cancers are classified as either stage IIIA, IIIB, or IIIC. The stage is based on the size of the tumor and which lymph nodes the cancer has spread to. Stage III cancers have not spread to other distant parts of the body.
The stage of lung cancer is the most important prognostic factor. Early stages of non-small lung cancer (stages 0 and 1) have a better prognosis than later stages (stages 2, 3 or 4). With small cell lung cancer, limited stage cancers have a better prognosis than extensive stage cancers.
This would determine the growth rate; tumors were deemed fast growing (fewer than 400 days), slow-growing (between 400 and 599 days) or indolent (600 days or longer).
Adenocarcinomas had a median doubling time of 261 days. Squamous cell carcinomas had a median doubling time of 70 days. Other lung cancers, which included large cell carcinomas and SCLC, also had a median doubling time of 70 days.
On average, lung cancers double in size in four to five months.
Other symptoms of lung cancer spread
Bones – bone pain, fractures, constipation, decreased alertness. Liver – nausea, extreme fatigue, increased abdominal girth, swelling of feet and hands, yellowing or itchy skin. Brain or spinal cord – headache, blurred or double vision, difficulty with speech, seizures.
Studies have shown that lung cancer doubling time can vary, from 229 days to 647 days in one study, depending upon the type. 7 It's possible that some types of lung cancer progress within weeks to months, while others may take years to grow.
Lung cancers typically start in the cells lining the bronchi and parts of the lung such as the bronchioles or alveoli. A thin lining layer called the pleura surrounds the lungs. The pleura protects your lungs and helps them slide back and forth against the chest wall as they expand and contract during breathing.
The Mechanics of Pulmonary Nodules
There is very little growth or change, if there's any at all. Cancerous pulmonary nodules, however, are known to grow relatively quickly—usually doubling in size every four months but sometimes as fast as every 25 days.
Carcinoid tumor is a rare type of tumor that usually grows slowly. Carcinoid tumors are cancerous, but have been called cancer in slow motion, because if you have a carcinoid tumor, you may have it for many years and never know it.
Can a CT scan tell if a lung nodule is cancerous? The short answer is no. A CT scan usually isn't enough to tell whether a lung nodule is a benign tumor or a cancerous lump. A biopsy is the only way to confirm a lung cancer diagnosis.
The smaller the nodule, the more likely it is to be benign. Also, benign nodules grow very slowly, if at all, while cancerous nodules on average can double in size every four months or less. Nodule content, shape and color: Another way to tell a benign lung nodule from a malignant one is to test its calcium content.
Nodules between 6 mm and 10 mm need to be carefully assessed. Nodules greater than 10 mm in diameter should be biopsied or removed due to the 80 percent probability that they are malignant. Nodules greater than 3 cm are referred to as lung masses.
Large-cell (undifferentiated) carcinoma.
It tends to grow and spread quickly, so it can be harder to treat than the other types.
Doctors use the same staging system for both non-small cell and small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer usually is diagnosed at a later stage than non-small cell lung cancer. It often is diagnosed at stage 3 or 4.
Because stage 0 NSCLC is limited to the lining layer of the airways and has not invaded deeper into the lung tissue or other areas, it is usually curable by surgery alone. No chemotherapy or radiation therapy is needed.
The 5-year survival rate for men is 18%. The 5-year survival rate for women is 25%. The 5-year survival rate for NSCLC is 26%, compared to 7% for small cell lung cancer. However, it is important to note that survival rates depend on several factors, including the subtype of lung cancer and the stage of disease.
Compared to the main bronchus, upper lobes are more likely to contain lung metastatic and brain metastatic. The lung metastatic is mainly contralateral upper lung region metastases. Additionally, the majority of invasive pulmonary ADC often occur in the upper lobes. ADC and SCC often occur in the upper lobes.

There is currently no cure for stage 4 lung cancer. However, certain treatments can alleviate the symptoms and prolong a person's life. The best approach to treatment depends partly on the type of lung cancer. There are two main types: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
About 2 in 5 people with the condition live for at least 1 year after they're diagnosed, and about 1 in 10 people live at least 10 years. However, survival rates vary widely, depending on how far the cancer has spread at the time of diagnosis.
The expression “slow growing cancer” refers to the cell grades involved. Low grade cancer cells are still cancer, but under a microscope appear very similar to normal cells. These grow more slowly and are treated differently from high grade cancer cells, which grow more quickly.
While lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the U.S., it's not often detected early. However, lung cancer screening offers hope for catching the cancer early when it's easier to treat. Unlike some other cancers, lung cancer usually has no noticeable symptoms until it's in an advanced stage.
