“We break the wheel together.” Such are the final words of Daenerys Targaryen.
In the final episode of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen gives a speech to her assembled Dothraki and Unsullied forces, promising to “liberate” the great cities of the world like she just “liberated” King's Landing.
Daenerys thanked her Dothraki soldiers for fulfilling a promise both Khal Drogo and her new bloodriders had made to her. "You killed my enemies in their iron suits," Daenerys told the crowd of men who fought for her. "You tore down their stone houses. You gave me the Seven Kingdoms."
Dragon fire is one of the deadliest weapons you can get in Westeros, which makes "dracarys" pretty much synonymous with major death and destruction. (By choosing "dracarys" as her last words, Missandei was telling Dany to go ham on King's Landing.
Daenerys Targaryen transformed into the Mad Queen in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones, but why did Daenerys go mad? Essentially, the reason Daenerys burned King's Landing to the ground is that she had already lost everyone and everything dearest to her.
"It wasn't what she thought it was. It's not enough." So what audiences were supposed to understand in that moment, according to Sapochnik, was that Daenerys is angered to hear the bells of surrender and see the Red Keep still intact and the city virtually unscathed.
In fact, Martin outright said as much during a Q&A back in 1999, calling the idea that Targaryens were magically immune to fire a “common misconception.” “TARGARYENS ARE NOT IMMUNE TO FIRE!” the author emphatically stated. “The birth of Dany's dragons was unique, magical, wonderous, a miracle.
We may never know. According to Entertainment Weekly's James Hibberd, who was on set at the time, the shooting script for the episode read something like, “Daenerys whispers something to him that he'll never hear and we'll never know…” In short, Emilia Clarke got to write her own lines for this part.
Varys's attempt to poison Daenerys makes his execution pretty justifiable—she had promised in Season Seven to burn him to death if he attempted to betray her, after all.
Missandei's brutal death was orchestrated by the queen herself, Cersei Lannister, as a means of threatening Dany against flying in on her one remaining dragon and taking the Iron Throne.
The Red Wedding is still the biggest tear-inducing moment of the entire series. A pivotal moment in pop culture, the penultimate episode of season three saw the death of several important characters. Robb Stark watches his pregnant wife Talisa die after she's brutally stabbed in the abdomen.
As soon as Dany dies, Drogon senses it and comes to her side. It looks like he's going to kill Jon for a second, but then he turns and melts the Iron Throne with dragon fire instead—presumably because he knew, in his dragon heart, that the Throne (or the pursuit of it, at least), was what really killed his mommy.
As theorised by Samwell Tarly in the finale, the dragon flew her to Volantis, where she'd grown up in exile after the death of her father, and cremated her body in line with family tradition.
Despite being saved by Daenerys from being raped by the tribe's warriors, however, the priestess betrays her and the magic ritual results in Daenerys's unborn child being stillborn and leaves Drogo in a catatonic state. Because Drogo will never recover, Daenerys smothers him with a pillow.
In A Clash of Kings, book two of A Song of Ice and Fire, Daenerys Targaryen goes into the House of the Undying and hears and sees all sorts of prophecies and visions of the past and of the future. One of the prophecies relates to three betrayals in Dany's story: Once for love, once for blood, and once for gold.
And he shall be called Rhaego!) Daenerys Targaryen about her unborn son. Rhaego was the son of Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen. According to a Dothraki prophecy, he would have been the Stallion Who Mounts the World.
But who was Varys writing to? One theory posits that although we only saw the Spider writing one letter, he was actually writing one to each of the Seven Kingdoms' rulers in hopes that they would support Jon's claim to the throne if they knew the truth.
Varys Knew He Was Going to Die
Removing one's valuables before imminent demise is a gesture we've seen in other stories before. It's sort of a ritual of accepting one's death, a way to prepare for what's to come.
At least as far as the show is concerned, it was definitely Bran. The day he was cut, Varys heard a voice from the flames. Just like Hodor heard Bran the day Ned left for the Eyrie, just like Ned heard Bran when he was going up the stairs of the Tower of Joy. Varys heard Bran.
Daenerys Targaryen's shocking turn toward madness in “The Bells,” the second-to-last episode of Game of Thrones Season 8, didn't make much sense.
Rulers of Westeros were sometimes named after previous kings and queens. The Mad King Aerys, for example, was actually the second Aerys Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne. "The First of Her Name" signifies that Daenerys is the first queen named Daenerys to rule the Seven Kingdoms.
Daenerys' transformation has a foundation in the books
Martin has already been crafting Dany's transformation toward madness in the books, hinting from the start that her path to the throne would be mired by moments of instability, violence, and anger towards anyone who dared defy her.
Easily the most callous, dastardly, and self-destructive villain in HBO's Game of Thrones universe, Cersei Lannister was, at points, television's most despised character, as her thirst for power and hatred of her brother, fan-favorite Tyrion Lannister, put her at direct odds with the heroes of our story.
For the Targaryen prince sometimes known as "the last dragon", see Rhaegar Targaryen. The last dragon belonging to House Targaryen died young in 153 AC, during the later part of the reign of King Aegon III, who was called the Dragonbane.
EMILIA TO NOT RETURN AS DAENERYS
The sequel of Games of Thrones will follow Jon Snow's (Kit Harington) life post the events of the series finale. Emilia Clarke, whose character Daenerys, dies in the final episode, confirmed that she's probably not reprising her role.
