In addition, younger people (aged 15-34 years) recorded an average Wages and salaries income of $40,055, well under the national average ($51,923).
The median salary in Australia in 2023 is 6,650 AUD (USD 4,420) per month. The median salary refers to the middle value of all the salaries considered. In other words, around half of the population in Australia earns less than 6,650 AUD per month, while the other half earns more.

The average annual salary in Australia is $68,900 and $35.30 per hour. It is just the average salary for basic workers but skilled and experienced workers also earn around $108,980 annually. The average salary also varies depending on the field of work and the job role of workers.

In Australia in 2009-10, the annual average Wage and salary income for persons was $48,907. Males recorded a higher average ($58,813) than females ($38,255).

In 1981, average weekly earnings for a man working full-time was $311 (the equivalent of $1,238 today) compared to $241 ($959 today) for a woman who worked full-time. This equates to a gender pay gap of 23%.
It's important to keep things in perspective, though. The average wage in the mid 1970s was around $6,000, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, so the median Sydney house price was almost six times' the value of the average annual income.
Our 2022 Poverty in Australia Snapshot found that there are 3.3 million people (13.4%) living below the poverty line of 50% of median income, including 761,000 children (16.6%). In dollar figures, the poverty line works out to $489 a week for a single adult and $1,027 a week for a couple with 2 children.
Officially, the average wage is $75,000 a year, but that is skewed by a small number of very high income earners. In reality, around 70 per cent of tax payers actually earn less than the average wage. If pensioners are included in this count, four out of five Australians earn less than the average.
So a taxpayer with an income of $80,000 a year is therefore in the top 20 per cent of Australians.
The average full time salary in Australia is $70,269 per year or $36.04 per hour. Entry-level positions start at $57,957 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $109,511 per year.
The national minimum wage is $640.90 per week, calculated on the basis of a week of38 ordinary hours, or $16.87 per hour.
