Art Garfunkel had the best-selling single of the year with "Bright Eyes". The single spent nine weeks in the top 10 (including six weeks at number one) and was certified platinum by the BPI. "Heart of Glass" by Blondie came in second place.
The best-selling album relesased in 1979 is THE WALL by PINK FLOYD which sold 33,000,000 copies.

It has been recorded by over 200 artists and has reached No. 1 in several territories. Scottish singer Lena Martell had a UK Singles Chart number one with her version in 1979.
The Sugar Hill Gang's 12-inch single "Rapper's Delight" - released in 1979 - became the first rap song to be played on the radio. The 15-minute song was edited down to six and a half minutes and reached Number 36 on the pop charts, making it the first hip-hop single to become a Top 40 chart hit.

A major invention of 1979 was the personal computer, described in US 4 136 359 by Stephen Wozniak and Apple Computers Inc. of Cupertino, California, which claims a microcomputer with a video generator and timing device to enable colour and high resolution graphics on a standard cathode ray tube (see Fig. 1).
