Does lemon turn your hair grey? While lemon does not turn the color of your hair grey directly, it generally lightens the shade since it has bleaching components. But if you leave it on for long, it can damage the follicles responsible for melanin production which will then lead to premature greying.
In terms of timing, Monahan says that it typically takes three to four applications for noticeable lightening from lemon juice. While that may not seem like much, keep in mind that the more you expose your hair to citric acid, the more you're deteriorating it over time. More on that below.
According to these articles, the citric acid in lemon juice is a natural bleach, or oxidizing agent. It whitens hair by chemically reducing your hair's color pigment, or melanin. When exposed to the sun, the citric acid accelerates the bleaching process.
Since baking soda is a scrubbing agent, washing your hair with it can gradually strip the dye from your locks. Baking soda can lighten all hair colors, but it might take a few washes to get your hair to the desired color.
Although this may seem like a permanent change, new research reveals that the graying process can be undone—at least temporarily. Hints that gray hairs could spontaneously regain color have existed as isolated case studies within the scientific literature for decades.
It deeply nourishes the roots and prevents premature greying. Lemon juice not only adds shine and volume to hair but also promotes healthy hair growth. Almond oil and lemon juice are both easily-available ingredients that can help you get rid of grey hair naturally.
If genetics or aging is the cause, nothing can prevent or reverse the process. However, treating graying hair could allow color pigmentation to return if the loss is due to a medical condition.
While lemon juice is more gentle than some hair dyes and hair bleach, it's still acidic. This means there's a risk of the juice drying out your hair and scalp. This can cause dry, frizzy locks and hair breakage, as well as scalp irritation.
Lemon juice has a drying effect on the hair, which makes it brittle. The more often a person uses the juice, the more likely they are to experience dryness and breakage. Combining lemon juice with sun exposure can exacerbate this damage.
Mix ¾ lemon juice to ¼ conditioner. Apply the mixture to your hair, combing it through from root to tip. Leave on for at least 1½ hours or overnight (if leaving on overnight, be sure to wrap your hair in a shower cap or something of the like). Rinse with warm water, followed by a deep conditioner to restore moisture.
As citric acid is a mild bleaching agent, using it on dark hair will not make any noticeable difference. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that using lemon juice on dark hair results in the appearance of red-orange tints.
Direct application
Rather than using it in place of shampoo or conditioner, apply the lemon juice to the scalp as a pre-shampoo treatment. Leave it on for a few minutes to allow the lemon to penetrate the hair follicles and skin. Afterward, rinse it out with warm water, and wash your hair and scalp with a mild shampoo.
Scientists don't know exactly why some people go gray early, but genes play a large role. Also, a vitamin B-12 deficiency or problems with your pituitary or thyroid gland can cause premature graying that's reversible if the problem is corrected, Benabio says.
Vitamin B-12 is the most common culprit, with folate, copper, and iron deficiencies increasing your risk, too. Dietary supplements may help these deficiencies and you might see your natural hair color start to grow back after several weeks.
Vitamins B6 and B12 have also been proven to boost melanin production. Goddard says that vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, has been found to trigger the production of enzymes and chemical reactions that boost the metabolism of the hair proteins (keratin and melanin) in the hair follicles.
Coconut oil improves your overall hair health and may even darken those grays. But bear in mind that using coconut oil for gray hair may not work effectively. It will undoubtedly boost your hair quality and appearance, but it may not make your hair darker.
Gray or white hair, which contains little or no pigment, sometimes gets yellow because it picks up pigments from the environment; for example, if you use a yellowish shampoo or conditioner, rather than a clear one, a trace of the color might be deposited on your hair.
What if I want to dramatically lighten dark grey hair? Bleach all of your hair and use a silver toner to adjust the color. Apply bleach to get rid of all pigment—you want your hair to be almost white for this. Then, wash your hair with a silver toning shampoo to introduce gorgeous light grey or silver pigments.
