Positive, or yang, polarities are fire and air signs: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. Negative, or yin, are water and earth signs: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
The yin signs are: Rooster, Rabbit, Pig, Snake, Ox, and Goat. Part of the yin and yang energy creates a compatibility triangle with certain signs to show how well they mesh with each other in areas of life such as in love, work, and friendship.
Since the zodiac animal cycle of 12 is divisible by two, every zodiac sign can occur only as either yin or yang: the Dragon is always yang, the Snake is always yin, etc. The current cycle began in 1984 (as shown in "Table of the sixty-year calendar" below).
In terms of astrology, you are a Yang type if your birth chart is dominant in the fire and air signs. These are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. You are a Yin type if your chart is made up of mostly earth and water. These signs are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Yin energy is more passive, feminine, and cool, while the masculine energy of yang is active and heated; yin represents the acceptance of what is, while yang represents the activity of doing and our attempts to change ourselves and the world around us.
In traditional Chinese medicine, practiced for thousands of years, all things—both substances as well as processes—have yin and yang qualities. Yin is feminine, yang is masculine. Yin is cold and wet, yang is hot and dry.
Yin qualities are female energy, softness, being passive, heaviness, coolness, feeling, and surrender. Yang attributes are male energy, hardness, being assertive, buoyancy, heat, thinking, and attack. The yang partner offers yang energy in exchange for yin, and the yin partner receives yang and gives back yin energy.
They describe a “yin dominant” personality as one that: places a priority on relaxation and calm. avoids conflict and is “passive” in decision making.
The balance of yin and yang is important. If yin is stronger, yang will be weaker, and vice versa.
Yin represents things that are cooler, quieter, more still and darker. It is characterized by the color black.
The Goat, also known as the Sheep or Ram, is the most feminine sign of the Chinese Zodiac. People born in the Year of the Goat are said to be compassionate and intelligent. Goats are often accused of being worrywarts.
The Rabbit is the fourth animal sign in the zodiac cycle and is associated with good fortune, happiness, and peacefulness. People born in the year of the Rabbit are believed to be gentle, compassionate, and creative, with a strong sense of family and community.
Some elements nourish each other and some elements control each other. Water is the most yin for example. It's slow, dark, and cold. Fire is the most yang.
The tiger and dragon are ancient symbols of yin and yang, forces that combine to make up the universe. Ancient Chinese Taoist philosophy explains the world in terms of two forces yin (from the ancient Chinese word for shady) and yang (from the word for bright).
From this similar concept, Day, Light, Sun, summer, Heat, Fire, active, strength, and Qi correspond to Yang, while Darkness, Moon, winter, Water, Gentle, Weakness, and Blood correspond to Yin.
However, in Taoism, both yin and yang are good, with neither representing evil. Another way the relationship between yin and yang is symbolized is through the curved lines. Rather than a straight line separating the two energies, a curved line shows their interaction as they merge.
The best position for the Yang dominant relationship is if they join forces and support each other in their respective intensity. On the other extreme, you can get two Yins together too. That is interesting, because they are both full of ideas, but they keep waiting for the other to take the action.
Yin characteristics: passive, negative, darkness, earth, north slope, cloudy, water, softness, female, moisture, night-time, downward seeking, slowness, consuming, cold, odd numbers, and docile aspects of things.
While yang and yin are not exclusively defined as “male” and “female,” and either sex can be considered yin or yang within a given context, in terms of their most general relation to one another, yin references the female and yang the male.
Yin is typically associated with feminine energy, introversion, the cold, the moon, passive qualities, and the dark. Yang is typically associated with masculine energy, extroversion, heat, the sun, active qualities, and light.
