Mainly the part that they can be threatening to human lives as well as their victims having a brutal death. There is also the fact that they are more relatable than some other mythical creatures since they can resemble both a human and a wolf (which could also be considered a dog).
Lon Chaney Jr. famously played the title character in the classic Universal horror film The Wolf Man. Though he starred in many other things, including a number of TV Westerns, Chaney will forever be tied to his iconic werewolf role.

Werewolves are shapeshifters, and while many myths depict them as having three forms — human, wolf, and hybrid — the reality of the Garou in Werewolf is in fact more substantial. The Garou have five forms, each suited to specific activities.

The Wolf Man is the most obvious of connections to Werewolf by Night, being the first most famous film to depict a werewolf. The film stars Lon Chaney Jr. as Lawrence Talbot, who in an altercation with a wolf is bitten and becomes burdened by his nightly transformations into a werewolf.
One of the most famous werewolf cases is Peter Stumpp, a wealthy farmer accused of being a serial murderer, cannibal and werewolf in Rhineland in 1589.

… released in 1941, that made Lon Chaney, Jr., son of legendary silent film star Lon Chaney, a Hollywood celebrity in his own right. The film, one of the many popular monster movies of the 1930s and '40s produced by Universal Pictures, greatly influenced popular conceptions of werewolves and lycanthropy.
The monthly transformation of a werewolf is extremely painful if untreated and is usually preceded and succeeded by a few days of pallor and ill health. While in his or her wolfish form, the werewolf loses entirely its human sense of right or wrong.

The Beast of Gevaudan
The Beast is physically the most powerful Werewolf, which includes his immense level of super speed; surprisingly, the Beast's large body mass does not seem to hinder his speed at all, as his long legs allow him to run faster with longer strides.
In reality, the werewolf is far older than that. The earliest surviving example of man-to-wolf transformation is found in The Epic of Gilgamesh from around 2,100 BC. However, the werewolf as we now know it first appeared in ancient Greece and Rome, in ethnographic, poetic and philosophical texts.
