The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, signed into law on March 11, 2021, authorized a third round of Economic Impact Payments and required them to be issued by December 31, 2021. The IRS began issuing these payments on March 12, 2021 and continued through the end of the year.
The government started sending the third stimulus checks on March 12, 2021. The IRS continues to send third stimulus checks as people submit their information to the IRS either by filing a 2020 tax return or using GetCTC.org. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2022.
Who was eligible for a third stimulus check. Under the terms, individuals could receive up to $1,400 through the third stimulus checks. Couples who file jointly could get up to $2,800.
The IRS issued three Economic Impact Payments during the coronavirus pandemic for people who were eligible: $1,200 in April 2020. $600 in December 2020/January 2021. $1,400 in March 2021.
Below, we compare the first $1,200, second $600 payments and the third check of $1,400, which includes a massive change to the definition of dependents.

Stimulus payments can total up to $1,400 per person for those with adjusted gross incomes of $75,000 or less as single filers, or $160,000 or less for joint filers.
Those with an adjusted gross income — which is gross income minus certain adjustments — of $75,000 or less are eligible to get the full $1,400. Those filing as head of household and earning at least $112,500 were not eligible for the stimulus payments.
Families earning less than $150,000 a year and individuals earning less than $75,000 a year should get the full $1,400 per person. Families earning up to $160,000 per year and individuals earning up to $80,000 per year will receive prorated stimulus checks for less than $1,400 max.
The third round of stimulus payments is worth up to $1,400 per person. A married couple with two children, for example, can receive a maximum of $5,600.
Another payment, in the form of a refundable income tax rebate, was issued to all taxpayers. Single filers received $500, and joint filers received $1,000. This rebate was split into two equal payments, delivered in June and August 2022.
About 17 million of those payments were via direct deposit. Those checks, amounting to more than $38 billion, were deployed starting Friday, March 19.
$1,400 per-person checks
Single people making less than $75,000, heads of household making less than $112,500, and married couples filing jointly making less than $150,000 qualify for stimulus checks. People making up to $80,000 will receive partial payments.
At $1,400 per individual, this will be the largest stimulus check yet for most Americans. The first round paid $1,200, and the second paid $600.
The government has issued a new batch of $1,400 stimulus checks, bringing the total number of payments to almost 167 million, or about $391 billion. This tranche included more than 1.8 million payments worth more than $3.5 billion. Most of the payments were prompted by tax returns recently processed by the IRS.
If you haven't gotten your $1,400 payment for yourself or your dependents — or got less than you qualify for — you will need to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. This is the final opportunity you will have to get your 2021 stimulus money, unless you file an amended 2021 tax return later on.
It's possible there's an issue with your check, or the IRS could have the wrong mailing address on file. Another reason why you may want to track down your payment is if you received less than the amount expected and you're owed a "plus-up" payment. By the way, in that case, you do not need to file an amended tax form.
the second Economic Impact Payment was $600 ($1,200 if married filing jointly) plus $600 for each qualifying child you had in 2020.
Tax filers with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns will receive the full payment.
Individuals can view the total amount of their third Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account.
As a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the U.S. government launched three stimulus check payments during 2020 and 2021 - there were no payments in 2022.

Your stimulus check history is also displayed on IRS notices
Over the past two years the tax agency has distributed notices through the mail to recipients of any of the three rounds of payments. The notices were sent to the address that the IRS has on file for each recipient.
If you're a single taxpayer with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $75,000 or less, you'll get the full amount of $1,400.
