Feeding at 7 to 9 months
Your baby will gradually move towards eating 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch and tea). Offering a wide variety of different foods is important to ensure they get enough energy and nutrients (such as iron).
Feeding your baby: 6–8 months old
From 6–8 months old, feed your baby half a cup of soft food two to three times a day. Your baby can eat anything except honey, which they shouldn't eat until they reach 12 months old. You can start to add a healthy snack, like mashed fruit, between meals.
Up until the age of 10 months old, your baby should get used to eating 1 to 2 meals a day. From about 10 months old, your baby should be ready to eat three meals a day. From here onwards, your baby should get the majority of their calories from solid food and should be having three meals a day along with some snacks.
Cups: introduce a cup from around 6 months and offer sips of water with meals. Using an open cup or a free-flow cup without a valve will help your baby learn to sip and is better for your baby's teeth. Gradually, in this time, your baby will move towards eating 3 meals a day.
At 7 and 8 months old, babies need solid foods two to three times a day. They're still getting most of their nutrients from breast milk or formula, though. A formula-fed baby will drink about 24 to 32 ounces of breast milk or formula in a 24-hour period.
Your 6-month-old will likely need about four to six breast milk or formula feedings and one to two solid meals each day. Once your baby starts solids, continue to offer breast milk or formula in the usual amounts and just add a small breakfast, lunch or dinner to your baby's day.
From 7 months, you can start to introduce a second meal if your baby is comfortably eating once a day but go at your little one's pace. Some might be ready for more food earlier or later than this.
Within a few months, your baby will be ready for a variety of foods and one to two meals a day. By 8 to 12 months old, you may have an enthusiastic eater who enjoys plenty of soft finger foods and wants three meals plus snacks every day.
At 4 to 6 months, feed your baby two meals, each approximately 2 to 4 tablespoons. At 7 to 12 months, feed them three meals, each approximately the size of your baby's fist.
Breastfed babies at six months still need at least 5-6 feeds per day. They are still too young to sleep without waking through the night and need to be breastfed at least once. Offer both breasts when you feed your baby, this will help to support longer sleeps and less “snacking and napping” behaviour.

A typical feeding schedule for an 8-month-old will look like three meals and three snacks throughout the day. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies at this age get around 750-900 calories a day. A little more than half of those calories (think: 400-500) should come from breast milk or formula.
But what happens when your baby starts eating solid food: is it possible to overfeed him? The short answer is: yes, if you ignore his cues and are not offering the right foods.
This might happen one or two weeks after their first solid tastes, or it might be more like 2 months – that's OK. However, ideally, by around 9 months of age baby will be eating 3 meals a day – such as breakfast, lunch and dinner with their usual milk in-between.
Offer two then three meals each day
For example give cereal mixed with milk at one feed and smooth mashed or pureed vegetables at the second feed. Then try some smooth mashed or pureed fruit at a third feed each day. You can offer some soft finger foods with each meal so that your baby can touch and play with foods.
Five-month-old babies typically breastfeed or bottle-feed every three to four hours and may have started eating solid foods about two times per day.
How much should a 7-month-old eat, and how often? Bottle feeding: How much formula for a 7-month-old baby? They should be drinking about six to eight ounces of formula, four to six times per day. Breastfeeding: Seven-month-olds still typically nurse about every three or four hours.
Start with menu items like pieces of soft cheese; small pieces of pasta or bread; finely chopped soft vegetables; and fruits like bananas, avocado, and ripe peaches or nectarines. These foods should require minimal chewing, as your baby may not yet have teeth.
6 to 9 months old: Offer full-fat (whole milk), pasteurized, plain yogurt. Greek yogurt is perfect for this age and will be easiest for babies to self-feed. Let baby scoop up the yogurt with their hands and/or eat from a pre-loaded spoon (passing the spoon in the air will make it easier for baby to grab).
So, when can babies eat eggs? Start offering eggs around the same time you start your baby on solid foods, after 6 months of age. Your little one's menu can begin with purees and very soft food (like infant cereal) and then expand to include more textured foods, such as eggs, fruits, vegetables, and meats.
At about 2 months of age, babies usually take 4 to 5 ounces per feeding every 3 to 4 hours. At 4 months, babies usually take 4 to 6 ounces per feeding. At 6 months, babies may be taking up to 8 ounces every 4 to 5 hours.
