Historical population
Australians living in urban areas increased from 60% in 1911 to 90%. Fertility fell from 3.1 births per woman in 1921 to 1.8. Life expectancy increased by 25 years since the early 1900s.
The dreary northern wastes isolated Australia from contact with Asia. This isolation was partly responsible for the late discovery of the country. It accounted in part for the relatively slow growth of settlement and handicapped the continent in its competition for settlers.
New South Wales is the most populous state of Australia, while Tasmania is the least populous state.
