Bega Valley Shire is a historic town well known for its cheese making heritage. Bega cheese, the leading Australian dairy and food company, serves as the Shire's biggest employer. The C2 from Bruny Island Cheese Company carries the title of the first commercially available raw cheese produced in Australia. The C2 is a semi-hard cow's milk cheese that is made with fresh unpasteurised milk from their own herd. The cheese draws inspiration from alpine cheeses from France and the North of Italy.

Bega Cheese is a truly Australian company, employing over 500 staff in the Bega Valley. Around 20% of overall production is exported to over 50 countries around the world. Proudly packed in Bega with cheese sourced from around Australia.
The Cheese Cutting, Packaging and Processing Plant was constructed and commissioned in Ridge Street, Bega in 1998 and was officially opened by then NSW Premier, Bob Carr. This state-of-the-art plant services the domestic and international markets for value added Bega Cheese consumer products.
During financial year 2022, the production volume of cheese in Australia amounted to approximately 408 thousand metric tons.

Kraft Cheese in Australia
In 1926, the Kraft Walker Cheese Company was formed in Melbourne. This was the parent company for Kraft Foods Ltd. The new Australian business started to manufacture Kraft cheddar cheese and allied products for distribution throughout Australia and New Zealand.
