Bride price is practiced all over the world, but it is especially common in Africa and Oceania. Payment may be made in different currencies; livestock and food are two of the more common. With the increased importance of commercial exchange, money has increasingly become part of bride price payments.

But what exactly is this bride price custom and how does it affect marriages in China?
