Back in July 1957, Australia's largest known crocodile, 8.64 metres long, was killed with a single shot on the banks of the Norman River by a Polish immigrant Krystina Pawlowski.

'Gustave' is so well-known and feared among locals that Hollywood even picked up on it. The movie Primeval is actually about the monstrous crocodile. Some rumors suggest 'Gustave' died in 2019. But there is no photographic evidence, and no carcass ever got recovered.
The largest one ever officially measured was Lolong, who was a saltwater crocodile that measured 20 feet three inches long and weighed 2,370 pounds. Unfortunately, he died of congestive heart failure in February 2013. The largest crocodile alive is Cassius who is over 100 years old.

Gansuana said corpses from war that had been washed up by the river may also have been wrongly attributed to Gustave. Gustave has not been seen since 2016, but, being over 75 years old, Gansuana said the monster crocodile could still be out there.
Mr Scott said Cassius's estimated age of 120 years was based on international research on large reptiles. Cassius holds the Guinness World Record since 2011 for the biggest croc in captivity.

The Mary River in the Northern Territory has 15 crocodiles per km, making it the most densely populated river! The temperature of the egg determines the sex of the animal.
What is this? Crocodiles have been known to be as far south as the Mary River in Gympie. This is only about 167km from Brisbane and only 52km from the Great Sandy National Park. More astonishingly, this is a whopping 449km away from the northern points of Queensland where they are typically found.
There are thought to be around 200,000 Saltwater Crocodiles in Australia, with the most found in the areas surrounding Darwin and the Mary River.
The largest crocodile in the world, the estuarine crocodile, or “saltie,” is 22 feet long and can weigh up to 2,200 pounds. Other crocodile species include the dwarf crocodile, which is less than six feet long, and the saltwater crocodile.

When it comes to the saltwater aspect of the ocean, crocodiles can enter these waters. They can also be found in freshwater areas as well, but saltwater conditions do not negatively affect them.
While Lolong was probably bigger than Gustave he wasn't the largest crocodile on record. Lolong was 6.17m and weighed 1,075 kg, Gustave was never measured but estimated to be around 6m and 1000kg, only slightly smaller.
According to legend, Gustave has been shot three times by hunters attempting to capture him, but he's survived every time and bears the scars. He was given his Gallic name by French hunter Patrice Faye, who has lived in Burundi for years and has attempted to capture the crocodile to study for science.

Graham is a male saltwater crocodile at Australia Zoo. He measures at 3.7m (11.84 ft) and weighs 350kg (770 lbs). Graham was caught at Townsville in north Queensland by Steve Irwin in 1988.
"Around the world, there are about 23 species … of crocodylians," Groh told Live Science. "Of these, the salties in Australia are the largest that exist in the world — only the Nile crocodile in Africa and the American alligator come close." Still, the scientists said, a typical salty doesn't get this big.

Since Gustave was never captured or killed, its length or weight could not be measured accurately. But based on eyewitness accounts, the estimated length would be around 20 feet and weight nearly a tonne.
An unarmed person and a crocodile differ greatly in terms of their morphology, size, and sheer force. Size, defenses, and offensive capabilities will matter most in a fight between an unarmed human and a crocodile. On land, humans can outrun crocodiles, but in the water, crocodiles are considerably swifter.
