Luke was a physician and possibly a Gentile. He was not one of the original 12 Apostles but may have been one of the 70 disciples appointed by Jesus (Luke 10). He also may have accompanied St. Paul on his missionary journeys.
The New Testament mentions Luke briefly a few times, and the Epistle to the Colossians refers to him as a physician (from Greek for 'one who heals'); thus he is thought to have been both a physician and a disciple of Paul. Since the early years of the faith, Christians have regarded him as a saint.
Matthew was a publican, or tax collector, before he was called as one of the Lord's Apostles. Because of that profession, we can guess that he was well educated and knew how to read and write, probably in several languages, including Greek. He also knew arithmetic.
We know that Luke, the author of Acts and the gospel of Luke, was a doctor (Colossians 4:14). And Paul once gave Timothy advice on medical treatment (1 Timothy 5:23). Doctors are referred to about 12 times in the Bible.

Mark founded the Church in Egypt and he became bishop of Alexandria, an important center of trade and power during ancient times. He died there sometime between the years 68-74 AD as a martyr for his belief in Jesus. Mark's Gospel is a lasting treasure for all believers.

He clearly used it, but it is also clear that they later reconciled completely. All three men head off into successful ministries. Barnabas mentors Mark to the point where Paul later sees him as a useful helper. Mark goes on to serve the Apostle Peter and record the Gospel that bears his name!
Jesus is the “Great Physician” according to Mark 2:17. He came to cure the sick and poor in spirit and to heal our souls and restore our relationship with God.

Today is the feast of St. Luke, physician and inspired author of the third Gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles. He is known as the patron saint of physicians, and we are grateful to Catholic Health Association USA for this prayer for physicians.
