Though their jaws are capable of applying incredible force, their teeth – even the permanent teeth of an adult dog - are more fragile than you might think. Their tooth enamel is up to six times thinner than in humans. This means they can fracture (break) their teeth by chewing on things that are simply too hard.
A: Bones are harder than teeth, so whether fresh or sterilized, chew bones can break a dog's teeth. Other treats that commonly fracture teeth are antlers, cow hooves, nylon and hard plastic bones, and even ice cubes.
The Hardest Teeth
The hardest substance ever discovered in nature is the tooth of a limpet (sea snail). They have a tensile strength between 3 and 6.5 gigapascals, breaking the previous record of spider silk at 1.3 GPa.
Australian Shepherds are great herding dogs. The Australian Shepherd has a bite force of 235psi.
Dog's first teeth come in between 2 and 5 weeks, followed by incisors at 4 to 6 weeks. Puppies grow 28 baby teeth, which include 6 incisors, 2 canines, and 6 premolars.
