The $577 million Victorian Heart Hospital is Australia's first state-of-the-art, specialist cardiac hospital. It provides innovative, holistic and patient-centred care, as well as world-leading research and education.

Open heart procedures, which represent a major portion of our volume, require cardiopulmonary bypass (heart-lung bypass machine) and are usually the most complicated and complex procedures.
Heart bypass surgery is a relatively safe and effective procedure that reduces the risk of heart attack and death. The procedure might also ease symptoms of coronary artery disease, such as chest pain.
Older people, women, and those with serious diseases, such as diabetes or lung disease, are at higher risk for complications.
There is insufficient evidence to confirm whether on-pump open heart surgery is safer than off-pump surgery. However, according to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), survival rates 1 year after either form of open-heart surgery are similar at about 96–97 percent.

Our Cardiologists Fees
Our review standard consultation fee varies from $120.00 – $140.00.
Open-heart surgeries usually require a hospital stay of four to five days. Once you're released from the hospital, it usually takes six to eight weeks for your breastbone and chest muscles to heal as you return, gradually, to a normal daily routine.
Cardiologists diagnose disorders and perform interventions on the heart. However, they cannot perform open-heart surgeries. Cardiac surgeons concentrate on heart problems only, while cardiothoracic surgeons perform a wide range of surgeries on different organs in the thorax.
Surgical mortality (during the first postoperative month) was higher after 65: 11.1% in patients with valve disease, and 11.4% in those with coronary artery disease, whereas in patients under 65 the figures were 6.5% and 4% respectively.
While stents offer a minimally invasive way to reopen a blocked artery, bypass surgery also remains a leading treatment for people with complex coronary artery disease (CAD).
Before surgery, you'll receive a general anesthetic that will put you to sleep so you won't feel any pain. You'll also receive a breathing tube and a bladder catheter. Open heart surgery typically takes three to five hours.
In general, you can resume your normal activities within one to two weeks after a minimally invasive heart procedure. For open-heart surgery, you can return to many activities within a month after surgery. Allow up to three months for proper recovery and healing.
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
In CABG — the most common type of heart surgery — the surgeon takes a healthy artery or vein from elsewhere in your body and connects it to supply blood past the blocked coronary artery.
Donnenfeld stated, “LASIK is the safest, most successful and most studied elective procedure in the world. It has the highest patient satisfaction rate, and it has continually improved over the last two decades.” We have seen even greater success in our own practice at the Shapiro Laser Eye Center.
