According to the scientists' calculations, you'll need between 100 to 1,000 plants for every 10 square feet to start making a measurable difference in fighting indoor air pollution. So, if you live in a home that's roughly 1,000 square feet, you'll need anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 plants.
Ivy. The ivy is not only beautiful but also an excellent dust-biter. They are also good at purifying indoor air. Ivies get rid of airborne toxins present in the air circulating in our homes.

Philodendrons are common houseplants that are also known to remove harmful chemicals from the air, formaldehyde being its chemical of choice to remove from the air. Philodendrons are easy to maintain and will make any room look great with their big dark green leaves.
It's totally true that many houseplants do this. But the reality is that the amount of Carbon Dioxide released and Oxygen absorbed is minimal (figures will be given and explained a little later). This means that it's absolutely safe to have plants in your bedroom.
Houseplants vs.
Although some plants can clean the air in our homes, they don't offer the same effect as using an air purifier. While plants naturally eliminate VOCs in our homes, they work very slowly, especially if you have few indoor potted plants.
An Indian household is usually incomplete without the presence of a sacred Tulsi plant. Every day, Tulsi gives out oxygen for 20 out of the 24 hours day. It absorbs toxic pollutants from the air such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide.
Thus, the study found most effective plant for absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) and reducing carbon footprint is a prayer plant, a member of the Calathea family. The prayer plant took in 14.4% of the total CO2 in the chamber, which is about 0.0003kg. And the least air purifying houseplant considered is the spider plant.
New research, however, continues to show that houseplants do next to nothing to purify the air in your home. It's a myth you almost wish hadn't been busted. Houseplants, though charming, do little to purify the air in a room, say the scientists who study the air we breathe.
Many species of indoor plants can actually help absorb mold and spores. Studies have shown that rooms with air-filtering houseplants can improve this air quality by 60%. It is highly recommended to keep one good sized house plant per 100 square feet to help clean polluted or dirt-filled air.
The most common toxic indoor plants are dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane), philodendron (Philodendron), and aloe vera (Aloe Vera). These plants contain a chemical called calcium oxalate raphides or “raphides,” which can cause mouth, throat, nose, eyes, and skin irritation in humans.
"Since plants are really active and represent growth, they may not be great for such a passive, restful, quiet room," explains feng shui master and mbg class instructor Dana Claudat.
A valerian plant will look beautiful in your bedroom thanks to its small pink and white flowers. Aside from the sweet scent, valerian plants have been used for centuries to help with sleep problems including insomnia. Inhaling the scent of valerian root has been shown to induce sleep and improve the quality of sleep.
The snake plant is another popular indoor plant that emits oxygen at night. It helps remove formaldehyde from the air. Adding it to home allows people to breathe in a healthy environment, even during the night.
Cotton and silky cotton plants are considered unlucky plants for the home. These snowy white plants look very pretty when used as a decorative element but they are not the perfect choice as per vastu as they are inauspicious and bring bad luck when placed indoors.
While plants can be beneficial, the evidence does not show that they are an effective tool to reduce air pollution. A 2014 review of the research in scores of studies5 found mixed evidence in real-world studies for improved air quality indoors.
