Qui-Gon Jinn learned to manifest as a Force ghost after death, thus allowing him to retain his consciousness in the Force. Several other Jedi also achieved the same ability, most notably Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and the redeemed Anakin Skywalker.
Some Jedi achieved immortality as Force spirits, their consciousness preserved in the Force. Every living being became one with the Force during the process of dying.
He found the key to immortality.
He studied the living Force and learned from the Force Priestesses how to retain consciousness after death; he also learned physical manifestation was possible but didn't achieve it because his training was incomplete.
Ultimately, Yoda gained a new understanding of true selflessness and of the Force, came to realize his hubris and the mistake the Jedi Order committed by becoming warriors, and unlocked the secret of Force immortality. As the Clone Wars raged on, Anakin and Obi-Wan had become heroes of the Republic.
After nine-hundred years, Grand Master Yoda of the Jedi Order died from illness and old age.
Yoda was a wise, experienced, and powerful Grand Master of the Jedi of an unknown species and the oldest known prophet in existence (having lived at least 900 years), considered the wisest and most powerful Jedi Master within the Star Wars universe.
Emperor Vitiate was a Sith Lord who successfully gained near immortality by draining the life force of an entire planet, later attempting to drain all life in the galaxy, which would give him true immortality.

After an arduous lightsaber duel, Maul mortally wounds Qui-Gon, stunning him by thrusting his saber hilt to his chin and then running Qui-Gon through. Maul is subsequently defeated by Obi-Wan. Before dying, Qui-Gon makes Obi-Wan promise that he will train Anakin.
