Edward's families are vampires who suck blood of human. So, that is the reason why Edward leaves Bella alone, because he wants to save Bella from the attack of his families. That situation makes Bella so sad, she feels alone when Edward leaves her, and she keeps herself in her room day to day moreover for months.
Due to her obsession with Edward (which she thought was love) she attached her entire life and future to this one person. When this person leaves (for what she thought would be forever), he takes her entire life and future along with it.
A heartbroken Bella falls into depression that lasts for months. But she discovers that when she puts herself in danger, a ghost-like image of Edward appears and begs her to be safe.
Of course, the saddest scene with Bella is when Edward breaks up with her. There are multiple scenes throughout New Moon when viewers see her emotionless or having severe nightmares, but the main scene that causes these ripple effects is when Edward leaves her.

"It's just Edward's voice in the book," Pattinson told his fans at Comic-Con. "And I guess it would look probably pretty cheesy if it was just my voice, so they've done these hallucinations, kind of semi-visible apparitions."
