Jedi like Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi have long stood as light against the darkness. But the record Sith-killer is actually Darth Bane himself. Darth Bane, founder of the Rule of Two, killed more Sith than any Jedi in the history of the Star Wars galaxy.
Eventually, war broke out between the Jedi and the Sith, during which time the Sith built empires which were sustained through slavery, but it would be the Jedi and the Galactic Republic that ultimately achieved victory. Even so, the Jedi and the Sith continued to do battle over the millennia.

Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Yoda's Jedi instructor was N'Kata Del Gormo, a Hysalrian Jedi Master, according to an in-universe legend.

Sidious, born Sheev Palpatine, was trained in the dark side of the Force by Darth Plagueis.
In the Star Wars universe, Darth Bane is a powerful Sith Lord who lived one thousand years before the events of the films and is known for being the originator of the Sith's "Rule of Two", which states: "One master and one apprentice can be the only Sith in the galaxy at a time".
The deaths of Sidious and Vader marked the end of the lineage of Dark Lords going back to Darth Bane, and the beginning of the New Republic Era.
The death of Darth Plagueis
However, Plagueis also developed a belief that the Force could "strike back" at him for his power. In truth, he became so powerful that the only thing he still dreaded was losing his power. Under the Rule of Two, Sidious killed his master and trained his own Sith apprentice, Darth Maul.
Weakened after their greed and lust for power caused infighting amongst themselves, the Sith were all but destroyed by Jedi Knights.
They then turned on each other, each controlling a nearly equal section of their Sith Empire. Thus began the Sith Civil War. Under Kreia's direction, the Jedi Exile retrained herself as a Jedi and fought the Sith Empire of Sion and Nihilus, eventually destroying them both.
