The sperm whale has the biggest brain of any animal species, weighing up to 20 pounds (7 to 9 kilograms).
The heaviest human brain ever recorded weighed 2,850 grams (6 pounds 4.5 ounces). It was measured by Dutch pathologist Gerard Christiaan van Walsem in 1899, during the autopsy of an unnamed young man who died at the Meerenberg Asylum in Santpoort, near Haarlem in the Netherlands.
If this were deemed an accurate measure of intelligence, the Minke whale would be the smartest species, having the highest glia-to-brain ratio of any species – 5.5 times greater than humans'.
Whales/dolphins and elephants have the largest brains, with weights up to 10 kg; the human brain, with an average weight of 1.35 kg, is of moderately large size.
The average brain weight of the adult male was 1336 gr; for the adult female 1198 gr. With increasing age, brain weight decreases by 2.7 gr in males, and by 2.2 gr in females per year. Per centimeter body height brain weight increases independent of sex by an average of about 3.7 gr.
Because multitasking “has been found to increase the production of the stress hormone cortisol as well as the fight-or-flight hormone adrenaline,” the human brain is simultaneously overloaded and overstimulated. In addition to the neurological consequences of overload, the psychological effects are just as severe.
The pig brain is larger in volume and weight (∼180 g) than that of a rodent (∼10 g) and is comparable in size to that of a nonhuman primate (∼300 g), while being much less expensive (Sauleau et al., 2009).
Leech: The interior structure of a leech is divided into 32 different segments, each of which has its own brain.
CHIMPANZEES. RECKONED to be the most-intelligent animals on the planet, chimps can manipulate the environment and their surroundings to help themselves and their community. They can work out how to use things as tools to get things done faster, and they have outsmarted people many a time.
The Etruscan shrew has the smallest brain of all mammals. Its cerebral cortex is very thin, only 400 to 500 µm on average [16,70]. As in other mammals, the cortex of the Etruscan shrew is a cytoarchitectonically heterogeneous sheet of tissue.
Silkworms have animal have 11 brains.
The brain, which serves as the silkworm's primary control centre, is situated in the centre of the head.
Overall, larger brain size and volume is associated with better cognitive functioning and higher intelligence. The specific regions that show the most robust correlation between volume and intelligence are the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes of the brain.
Most dogs' brains are roughly the size of a lemon, tangerine, or any other small to medium-sized citrus fruit. You do have to take into account dog breeds along with the pet's size. For instance, Labrador Retrievers or Border Collies are larger domestic dogs, allowing more space for a big brain.
Although the male brain is 10 percent larger than the female brain, it does not impact intelligence. Despite the size difference, men's and women's brains are more alike than they are different. One area in which they do differ is the inferior-parietal lobule, which tends to be larger in men.
Human brains vary considerably in size across adults, with males having slightly larger brains than females. It is hard to pin down what makes the human brain exceptional among mammals—neither brain size, relative brain size nor number of neurons is unique to humans.
1: Chimpanzee
Chimpanzees can learn sign language to communicate with humans. Topping our list of smartest animals is another great ape, the chimpanzee. The impressive intellectual abilities of this animal have long fascinated humans.
Scientists have studied both species and their brains to find the answer to this very question. And, scientifically speaking, dogs are likely smarter than cats. The research study looked at the brains of animals in the order Carnivora, a group of mammals containing bears, seals, raccoons as well as cats and dogs.
Horses and Dogs are both intelligent animals, but they have different cognitive strengths. Horses excel in areas like navigational intelligence while dogs do better with social intelligence. Neither animal is smarter than the other, that's just what makes them unique!
Snails have more teeth than any animal.
This is TRUE. A snail's mouth is no larger than the head of a pin, but can have over 25,000 teeth (but these aren't like regular teeth, they are on its tongue).
Icefishes of the family Channichthyidae has white blood.
Sea cucumbers have yellow blood due to a high concentration of a yellow vanadium-based pigment called vanabin. Some members of the phylum Annelida (segmented worms and leeches) have a greenish respiratory pigment called chlorocruorin.
Although death has historically been medically defined as the moment when the heart irreversibly stops beating, recent studies have suggested brain activity in many animals and humans can continue for seconds to hours.
Pigs have the intelligence of a human toddler and are ranked as the fifth most intelligent animal in the world! In fact, pigs are more intelligent and trainable than any breed of dog. They learn their names in just two weeks and come when they're called.
By contrast, our closest living relatives have much smaller brain sizes: Modern chimpanzees and orangutans have brains averaging about 400 cc, with gorillas averaging about 500 cc (Tobias 1971, see appendix A table 3).
