The real Horcrux was taken to Twelve Grimmauld Place where Kreacher, following his master's orders, tried to destroy it. When it went missing, Kreacher apprehended Mundungus Fletcher, who had stolen the locket and given it to Dolores Umbridge.
Regulus's locket was found by Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore in June of 1997 when they also attempted to obtain the Horcrux. Harry gave it to Kreacher the following August, as an act of kindness.
The locket was around the neck of Dolores Umbridge. She had forcefully taken it from Mundungus Fletcher who had himself stolen it from 12, Grimmauld Place, the home of Sirius Black. In the books and the movies, the locket is then stolen from Umbridge by Harry, Hermione and Ron.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
The locket was in the possession of Hepzibah Smith, who purchased it from Borgin and Burkes for an extortionate amount. It was shown to Tom Riddle during a visit to Hepzibah.
So Umbridge acquires the locket as a bribe from Mundungus Fletcher, and though it once belonged to Salazar Slytherin, Merope Gaunt, and Hepzibah Smith, Umbridge is unaware that the locket is one of Lord Vodemort's Horcruxes - or that it belonged to him at all.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
In this book, Rowling reveals that Bellatrix is the guardian of Helga Hufflepuff's cup (though she is unaware that it is a Horcrux), which Voldemort has entrusted the Lestranges to keep in their Gringotts vault.
28, 1997: Ron Weasley destroys Salazar Slytherin's locket deep in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, by stabbing it with Godric Gryffindor's sword.
And unlike with Harry, Voldemort did say the spell when he killed Bertha Jorkins to make Nagini a Horcrux. When Voldemort fell at Godric's Hollow, he had split his soul into six parts, and Nagini is to be the seventh to reach his goal. But Voldemort never knew about the Harrycrux.
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.
Tom Riddle was a descendent of Slytherin through the Gaunt family.
Regulus does not appear physically in any of the films but is mentioned throughout by various characters. His primary references came from his house-elf, Kreacher, who revealed that Regulus retrieved Slytherin's Locket after discovering it was a Horcrux and attempted to destroy it.
Harry, Ron and Hermione eventually discovered the original locket in the possession of Dolores Umbridge, and destroyed it with the Sword of Gryffindor.
If they had placed it in the purse, it would have been very difficult to find it again, in case it got lost (Hermione's purse seems to follow Earthen gravity).
Regulus decided that he didn't want to serve Voldemort any more, and also discovered that Voldemort had created a Horcrux. Regulus went to the cave with Kreacher in order to take Salazar Slytherin's locket and drank the potion. He then ordered Kreacher to take the locket and leave.
Regulus showed courage and integrity when, finally rejecting Voldemort's beliefs, he attempted to destroy Voldemort's Horcrux that was hidden in the sea cave, even knowing he would never survive. Although he intended for Kreacher, his House-elf, to complete the task, his plan failed.
The locket was the only of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes that was not destroyed in or anywhere near Hogwarts. The diary and the cup were both destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets, the ring in the Headmaster's Office, the diadem in the Room of Requirement, Nagini in the Entrance Hall.
Dolores Umbridge
Indeed, she was the one who sent Dementors to attack Harry in Little Whinging. And obviously it didn't end there – Umbridge's list of mean tricks was about as long as her list of Educational Decrees.
Mad-Eye Moody is a Hufflepuff.
Nonetheless, despite her initially benevolent nature, Nagini's blood curse eventually turned her into a snake permanetly. Though it is unknown if she became evil as a result of that, or was turned evil as a result of Voldemort turning her into a Horcrux. As a snake, Nagini was completely loyal to Lord Voldemort.
Nagini seemed integral to Lord Voldemort's survival before he could be restored to his body, and we learnt, quite grotesquely, that Voldemort even tasked Wormtail to 'milk' Nagini so he could live off her venom to keep his strength up.
The diary. Lord Voldemort's first Horcrux was created when he was still at Hogwarts, known then as Tom Riddle. After murdering a schoolgirl called Myrtle, with the help of the ancient monster that dwelled within the castle, the Basilisk, his soul was split for the first time.

The Locket
Of all of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes, Salazar Slytherin's old locket is the most difficult to obtain and destroy. In the Half Blood Prince, Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore travel to an old cave where the Dark Lord would torture victims during his time as a teenager.
It is perhaps interesting that no person destroyed more than one Horcrux. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Dumbledore, Crabbe (indirectly: the diadem fell apart in Harry's hands after being damaged by Crabbe's fiendfyre), and Voldemort each destroyed one of the seven.
