Steven Van Slyke and Ching Wan Tang pioneered the organic light emitting diode, or OLED, an advance in flat-screen displays found in computers, cell phones, and televisions that provides increased power efficiency, longer battery life, and improved display quality.
OLED was invented in 1987 by scientists Ching Tang and Steven Van Slyke from the company Eastman Kodak. However, after its production, it still took a long time to be mass-produced. Eastman Kodak went on to produce digital cameras in 2003. In 2004, Sony released the first OLED TV.
OLED isn't a new technology; far from it. It first arrived on the scene in 1987, with Kodak developing it for their digital cameras. Little did anybody know that what Kodak had created would bring about so many exciting possibilities in the world of television.
Global OLED Technology LLC develops and administers intellectual property purchased by Korea's LG Group from the Eastman Kodak Company for US$100 million in December 2009.
Kodak - where it all started
In the early 1980s, Kodak invented OLED technology, and following years of development, licensed the technology to around 20 companies, including LG, CMEL and others.
Samsung leads OLED display supply to Apple.
Apple OLED supplier Samsung Display will start manufacturing OLED panels for the iPhone 15 series a month earlier than planned due to production problems with one of Apple's other suppliers, according to a new report out of Korea.
In looking at standard 4K LED TVs vs 4K OLED TVs, both offer great viewing experiences and improvements over 1080p. But LG OLED technology will truly transform your home entertainment experience with superior blacks, cinematic colors and High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision support.
Bring the movie theater experience home with Samsung OLED. Combining 8.3 million self-lit pixels with Quantum Dots (QD) lets you discover the ultimate entertainment experience.
That's right, LG makes the OLED displays for Sony and Vizio, as well as LG-branded OLED TVs. So if you buy an OLED TV from Sony, for example, you're still getting an LG OLED panel, but you're paying for Sony's design, picture processing and audio technologies, as well as its smart operating system.
Samsung has reportedly signed a deal for LG's OLED TV panels. Reuters reports that LG Display will supply high-end 77- and 83-inch white OLED panels to Samsung in a deal that could help it turn a profit amid fierce competition in LCD panels from Chinese rivals.
According to Reuters , Samsung has inked a deal with LG to buy high-end white OLED (WOLED) TV panels from its long-standing rival. LG may start supplying the panels as soon as this quarter.
OLED diode technology was invented by researchers at the Eastman Kodak company in 1987. Chemists Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke were the principal inventors. In June 2001, Van Slyke and Tang received an Industrial Innovation Award from the American Chemical Society for their work with organic light-emitting diodes.
Sony vs LG TV: Our verdict
We can't say that its OLED or 8K TVs are any better or worse than LG's, but between the two brands, LG has a greater choice at the lower end of the price range while still offering premium models at the opposite end of the scale.
In terms of picture quality, OLED TVs are generally considered to be the better option due to their perfect blacks and infinite contrast. However, QLED TVs can still produce very high levels of brightness and colour accuracy, and they are often more affordable than OLED TVs.
“Immersive” and “innovative” can't begin to describe the LG OLED TV 8K. Featuring an expansive 88-inch OLED display with stunning 8K resolution, discover more about this groundbreaking television.
QLED displays handle motion better than OLEDs since most QLEDs offer variable refresh rates (VRR) and low input lag. Also, QLED TVs are generally less expensive and readily available in most markets, unlike QNED displays.
The successor to the 4K display resolution is 8K resolution. 8K resolution has four times the number of pixels as a 4K display while 8K TV has a resolution of 7680 x 4320, so an 8K screen will be able to show images with much more detail and clarity than a 4K TV. The first 8K TVs were introduced at CES 2019.
In January 2015, LG Display signed a long-term agreement with UDC for the supply of OLED materials and the right to use their patented OLED emitters. LG is the leader in the push for OLED Televisions.
The iPhone 14 Pro has completely new OLED emitter materials from the panel suppliers.
The Nintendo Switch OLED has a 7-inch 1280x720 AMOLED display, produced by Samsung Display.
The iPhone 13 is the latest in a new generation of OLED Smartphones. OLEDs have now evolved and emerged as the premium mobile Smartphone display technology.
OLED technology
The Super Retina and Super Retina XDR displays use organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. Super Retina and Super Retina XDR includes further advancements over traditional OLED displays to enable an incredible viewing experience, for the first time rising to the standards of iPhone.
OLED displays much deeper blacks as compared to AMOLED displays. You cannot see the screen in AMOLED display under direct sunlight. However, the AMOLED display quality is much better than the OLEDs as it contains an additional layer of TFTs and follows backplane technologies.
