99 was a malformed clone of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett who served the cloning facilities and performed janitorial duties at Tipoca City on the planet Kamino during the Clone Wars. He died during the Battle of Kamino in 21 BBY.
Despite (or perhaps because of) his physical shortcomings, Clone 99 was gentle, thoughtful and wise, offering a unique perspective for cadets facing the rigors of military training. During the Separatist invasion of Tipoca City, he assisted a group of clone cadets in their defense of the cloning facility.
The team's unit number is an homage to a clone named simply 99. (Viewers met him at the start of The Clone Wars Season 3 in “Clone Cadets.”) Clone 99 was considered a failure due to his malformed physical limitations.
