Moana Waialiki is the titular protagonist of Disney's 2016 animated feature film of the same name. Born on the island village of Motunui, Moana is the daughter of Chief Tui and Sina, with an inherited love for the seas and voyaging.
Maui is not Moana's father. Her father is Cheif Tui, the leader of the village of Motunui.
She does not have to be saved by a man, and end up with her “Prince Charming.” Moana is independent from the beginning, a strong leader, resilient, and she is not white!
Currently, there are no official plans for an animated Moana 2 movie being developed for a theatrical release. However, in January 2022, Disney did confirm that a Moana sequel series was in the works for release on Disney+. This will continue the young heroine's story under director David G.
The young heroine Moana wasn't always the only child seen onscreen. She had six brothers, including one brother who tormented her and another who was wise and supportive. In these versions, Moana was the best sailor among her brothers, but still overlooked by her father, Chief Tui.
The latest character to join the Disney Princess franchise is Moana, the daughter of Motunui's chief Tui and Sina. Unlike other princesses, Moana's parents didn't have a prominent role in the story, but they are alive through her whole journey.
Although Moana is from the fictional island Motunui some 3,000 years ago, the story and culture of Moana is based on the very real heritage and history of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. In fact, once you start looking for ties to Polynesian culture in Moana, it's hard to stop!
The theory is that there is a barrier between the spiritual, mystical world and the real world, with Maui's island located in the former. In order for Moana to get there (and return the relic stolen from the goddess Te Fiti) she has to die, too.
Maui is her guardian angel, who was tasked to take her to 'Te Fiti', which stands for heaven in the movie. “The whole movie was about her journey to the afterlife.”
Nope. It turns out Moana just doesn't have one in the movie. "It's a film about the heroine finding herself," Musker and Clements revealed to EW about whether or not Moana was going to have a romance.
Gramma Tala : But one day, the Heart will be found by someone who will journey beyond our reef, find Maui, deliver him across the great ocean to restore Te Fiti's Heart and save us all.
"Pua the pet pig was originally going on the journey with Moana, but the issue was that in a classic hero's journey, the hero leaves all comforts behind. And so we made the difficult decision to leave poor Pua at home, so that all things of Moana's family are left behind," says Shurer.
Moana is not a princess
Characters Chief Tui and wife Sina from the new Disney film, "Moana." Moana is not a princess, but her father, Chief Tui, does rule the land. “She's the daughter of a chief, and she's a heroine,” Cravalho said. “I think this day and age we need more heroines, more heroes and heroines.”
Disney retitled Moana in different countries, with most European countries using Vaiana. This change was reflected in the movie too, as Moana's name was changed to Vaiana due to copyright issues.
Although Moana's relationship with Maui never extends beyond the platonic level in the film, and although he is a 1,000-year old demigod and she is a 16-year old human, a lot of fans of the film like to put her and Maui in a romantic pairing known as Hooked Wayfinder.
As Tamatoa's evil plan is working, everyone arrives to prevent him from making a vow with Moana. As Maui breaks the villain's necklace and break the spell, Moana realized that Maui is her true love.
Immortality: Since becoming a demigod, Maui is virtually immortal, looking the same in the present as he did one thousand years ago.
