Jacob Dutton is the proprietor of the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch after the death of his younger brother, James Dutton (1883's Tim McGraw). Jacob becomes a father figure to James' sons, John and Spencer, and oversees the Dutton's legacy throughout Prohibition and the Great Depression.
But returning savior nephew Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) displays his killer instinct in the Paramount+ "Yellowstone" prequel. In the finale, Spencer wins a sword duel on yet another ship trying to return home to his embattled Montana family.
When an attack broke out in 1883's penultimate episode titled "Racing Clouds," the show caught up to its opening sequence, where Elsa got shot with an arrow. By the series finale, her wounds were unable to heal and though she managed to endure for a while, she died in Montana.
Apparently, Phyllis was a drug addict who did not care for the child. Thus, Garrett killed her so that James could be taken away from them and raised in a better family. Evelyn Dutton and John then adopted James, and he began living with the Duttons.

Yellowstone fans know that Duttons have been buried in the same spot in Montana for over a century. The Dutton family cemetery makes more sense after 1883 revealed that Elsa was the first person to be buried on the land.
Who are Jamie's Biological Parents? Though Jamie was raised by John and Evelyn Dutton, his real parents are Garrett and Phyllis Randall. Since Jamie was a baby when he was adopted he does not remember them.
Lee may have initially been the favorite, but Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) was the prodigal son. John probably didn't react in the best way when he branded him with the Yellowstone 'Y' after Kayce told him that he was in love with a pregnant Monica Long (Kelsey Asbille), but time heals all wounds.
