Sang-woo behaves with generosity, but this kindness is the direct result of one of Squid Game's greatest deceptions. It's not that Sang-woo suddenly turns evil when he betrays Ali.
Oh Il-nam (Korean: 오일남), also referred to as the Host or Player 001, is the main antagonist of the first season of the South Korean Netflix drama Squid Game.
456 His Jacket. Before the Marbles game round, Gi-hun gave his jacket to the old man to cover his trousers after Gi-hun noticed Il-nam had wet himself while sleeping. Later, the old man hands Gi-hun his own jacket, saying the other players "will look down on him" if he doesn't have a jacket.

Oh Il-nam (오일남 O Il-nam?), also known as Player 001, was a rich financial tycoon who was the creator and host of the Squid Games. In 2020, he competed as an elderly contestant in the 33rd Squid Game to relive his childhood memories before he died.
As well as befriending Eleven in order to gain her trust so she would remove his Soteria implant, we learn in the final episode that 001 initially spared El because he wanted her to join him. He viewed her as an ally rather than an enemy because they were "alike".
"I imagined being him and thought to myself, 'What is the color that you would never choose to dye your hair? ' Then I came to the conclusion that Gi-hun would never dye his hair red. It would be the [most unexpected] thing for him to do. So I chose the color and I thought it really showed his inner anger."
Gi-hun's fate seems pretty open-ended by the end of the show, but it's clear that the game has sunken its claws into him for good, and even though he's won, there's never really an escape. In this case, the "red light" - aka his hair - signifies his inability to move forward after all he's experienced.

Unfortunately for Ali, Sang-woo's plan was a trick to distract him while he swapped Ali's bag of marbles for a bag of pebbles, keeping the real bag for himself. With minutes left in the challenge, Sang-woo turns in the bag of marbles he stole from Ali, securing his safety and Ali's demise seconds later.
In this sense, Gi-hun and Sang-woo are both exceptional. Gi-hun's empathy contrasts with Sang-woo's psychopathy.

Gi-hun, angered by the turn of events, makes his move, but when he gains the upper hand, he's not able to easily kill his friend. Instead, he decides to forfeit, giving up the winnings as long as he and Sang-woo can walk away.
It's no coincidence that Gi-hun wins ₩45.6 million won in episode 1, is later designated as Squid Game Player 456, and eventually wins Squid Game's ₩45.6 billion won grand prize. The symbolism doesn't end there.
