For hundreds of years disciples of Jesus have spoken of the “three enemies of the soul” – the world, the flesh, and the devil.
Our Spiritual Enemies: The World, the Flesh, and the Devil explores the adversaries we as Christians encounter in our daily lives and the defenses we have against them. Our goal is to live a victorious Christian life unburdened by sin.
“For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint.” The minute Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit they were enemies of God.
In Christian theology, the world, the flesh, and the devil (Latin: mundus, caro, et diabolus; Greek: ό κοσμος, ή σαρξ, και ό διαβολος) have been singled out "by sources from St Thomas Aquinas" to the Council of Trent, as "implacable enemies of the soul".
The Enemies of Salvation: The Flesh, the World, and the Devil.
In the Bible, my enemy is someone who does not like me, someone who wants to do me harm, never someone I don't like or to whom I want to do harm. Jesus doesn't allow us to be that way. In fact, He said we are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Mt 5:44).
In the Old Testament the enemies of God were Philistines, Edomites, Moabites, etc. The common thread among all these enemies of God was idol worship. The people of God were continually drawn to worship the idols of God's enemies.
Objection 1: The powers of the soul are called the soul's 'parts'. But there are only three parts of the soul commonly enumerated by everyone, viz., the vegetative soul, the sentient soul, and the rational soul.
Aristotle distinguishes in the De anima three main kinds of souls (the nutritive, the sensitive-locomotive, and the rational) corresponding to plants, animals, and human beings.
Virgil distinguishes between three types of sin: sins of 'incontinenza', sins of 'violenza', and sins of 'frode'. We shall examine these in the order of gravity accorded to them in the Inferno, starting with sins of 'incontinence', then moving onto 'violence', and concluding with 'fraud'.
These five thieves are kaam (lust), krodh (wrath), lobh (greed), moh (attachment) and ahankar (ego or excessive pride).
Pharaoh aroused God's anger after oppressing Israel and refusing to listen ten times. God's anger was an act of judgment on Pharaoh and his armies.
God chooses Israel and ultimately Jesus, and this results in the exact opposite of God favoring one group to the exclusion of all others. Instead, God works out his plan to extend his love to all the world through one group or individual.
Enemies have “unconditional antagonism” toward you.
Their antagonism may be due to jealousy, a desire for vengeance, psychological issues, or a combination of these and other potential factors. If a true friend is someone who always has your back, then a true enemy is someone who always stabs you in the back.
Notice “the obedience that comes from faith.” Wherever you find Christian faith, alongside it you'll find two views of the relationship between obedience and faith that are enemies of the gospel.
Matthew 5:43-48
You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.
It is the belief that humans have two or more souls, generally termed the "body soul" (or "life soul") and the "free soul". The former is linked to bodily functions and awareness when awake, while the latter can freely wander during sleep or trance states.
The Five Soul Cycles
They undergo is a structured development — a structured way of learning. The Souls go through the five stages of being an Infant Soul, a Child Soul, a Young Soul, A Mature Soul, and Old Soul, until they realize their Buddhahood, Krishnahood or Christ Consciousness.
The soul or atman, credited with the ability to enliven the body, was located by ancient anatomists and philosophers in the lungs or heart, in the pineal gland (Descartes), and generally in the brain.
"The mind is said to be the highest power in our soul."(6) But the image of God is said to be in us according to what is highest in us, and so the image of God is only in us insofar as it is in the mind. Thus the mind, as containing the image, designates the power not the essence.
The Epicureans considered the soul to be made up of atoms like the rest of the body. For the Platonists, the soul was an immaterial and incorporeal substance, akin to the gods yet part of the world of change and becoming.
Unwilling to warn Israel's deadly enemies, Jonah decides to run away instead of obeying God.
In the book of Isaiah, God refers to Abraham as “my friend” (Isaiah 41:8, ESV).
Then God shows up to wrestle with him and punches Jacob in the groin, the biological source of his fruitfulness. Because Jacob won't receive God's blessing, God wounds him in the place that allowed him to generate his own blessings.
