One major character has contributed, more than any other, to protagonist Thomas Shelby's radical transformation: the love of his life, Grace Shelby.
Lizzie is in love with Thomas, and while he definitely cares for her, her love is unrequited. In the final episode of Series 2, Lizzie attempts to explain her feelings to him, but gives up trying when it becomes evident that he's not even listening. After Grace's death, Lizzie becomes Thomas' emotional crutch.

Grace was Tommy's biggest love because she did what no other women could: she never judged him but confronted him when needed and she sort of healed him. He was at peace with her.
Lizzie can sense Tommy is starting to fall off the deep end, typified by him burning Ruby's chair. It's clear he's in mourning but Lizzie tries to comfort him. “Not yet.” Tommy says. He's going to change for good but right now, he needs to finish what he's started.
Tommy attempted to quell her anger, explaining that, yes, he did regret marrying her, but only because he had put her through so much as a result. But after the Mosleys revealed that he had slept with Diana (Amber Anderson) at a dinner party, it's hard to imagine she'll be able to forgive Tommy.
