As of the latest data (January 2022), the majority of TikTok users are female (57%). And 43% are male. In a similar vein, the majority of TikTok creators are also female (53.79%).

After hitting a new high in 2022, CivicScience noted a “steep decline” for TikTok among younger generations this year: “Usage fell from 18% to 11% among Gen Z (18-24) and from 10% to 5% among young Millennials (25-34) from August 2022 to June 2023.”
TikTok is a social media app dedicated to short-form videos created for and consumed by users. The length of videos is 15 to 60 seconds. The format lends itself to entertainment and comedy. However, it is increasingly used for infotainment.
It's common to think of TikTok as an app made specifically for kids and teenagers, but actually only a third of TikTok users are under the age of 20. In fact, about 14% of users are between the ages of 40 and 49, and 7% are over the age of 50.
You Feel Like Being Part of a Community
While using TikTok, you'll feel like a part of a community whether you are following others or have followers of your own. It's because the platform promotes interactions among people, helping create a bond—a community.
According to recent research studying TikTok users by age, a large majority of TikTokers are between the ages of 18 to 34. More specifically, 71% of all TikTok adult users—or nearly three out of every four—fall within this age range. Altogether, this makes up close to 775 million TikTok users worldwide.
Why does the US want to ban TikTok? The United States wants to ban the application for several reasons. The main reason is national security. U.S. lawmakers are concerned that ByteDance may leak U.S. user data to the Chinese government if the Chinese government forced them to.
Fact: TikTok's parent company ByteDance Ltd. was founded by Chinese entrepreneurs, but today, roughly sixty percent of the company is beneficially owned by global institutional investors such as Carlyle Group, General Atlantic, and Susquehanna International Group.
54% of TikTok users are female and 46% are male. Roughly 5% of TikTok's global audience are women between 18 and 24 years old. Around 17% of the platform's audience are men between 18 and 24 years old. 55+ year-olds are the smallest group on TikTok, at 1.7%.
Top creators say that TikTok pays contributors between 2 and 4 cents per 1,000 views through its TikTok Creator Fund. Doing the math, that means creators stand to earn $20 to $40 dollars per 1 million views through the program.

As of 2022, approximately 41 percent of users in the U.S. engaged with the popular social video app. Around seven in 10 respondents aged between 18 and 19 years were using TikTok, while usage among respondents aged between 20 and 29 years was approximately 56 percent.
TikTok: TikTok has a predominantly younger audience, with a significant user base in the 16-24 age range. It appeals to a wide range of demographics, but it is particularly popular among Gen Z. Instagram: Instagram has a broader user base, appealing to a wider age range including millennials and older demographics.
The social media platform allows its users to both create and watch short video content, that is primarily 15 seconds in length. People crave micro-entertainment and short bursts of video distraction, this is one of the main reasons for the app's popularity. Content is short, fun and on-trend.
But the wildly popular platform, developed with homegrown Chinese technology, isn't accessible in China. In fact, it's never existed there. Instead, there's a different version of TikTok — a sister app called Douyin.
Jean Twenge, our nation's leading researcher on how social media impacts child and adolescent development, recommends that no child under 13 should be on any social media, including TikTok. And I would add that many 13-year-olds aren't ready. TikTok offers a curated version of their app for under-13s. Don't use it.
What age is TikTok recommended for? Common Sense recommends the app for age 15+ mainly due to the privacy issues and mature content. TikTok requires that users be at least 13 years old to use the basic TikTok features, although there is a way for younger kids to access the app.
The app is letting users restrict their videos so only viewers only the age of 18 can watch. In a blog post, TikTok announced an expansion of its Content Levels, which group the app's users by age and restrict the content seen by younger groups.
According to a study by Influencer Marketing Hub, the best time to post on TikTok overall is on Tuesday at 9 a.m., Thursday at 12 a.m., and Friday at 5 a.m. These are additional high-engagement times to post content on the platform: Monday: 6 a.m., 10 a.m., 10 p.m. Tuesday: 2 a.m., 4 a.m., 9 a.m.
TikTok is the most addicting app to Gen Z
And as our data shows it's also their favorite social media platform, it should come as no surprise that nearly half of Gen Z say TikTok is the most addictive one, too.
If you're struggling with mental health, TikTok may offer a sense of community and solidarity, enabling you to feel “seen” and “not alone.” But according to a University of Minnesota study, the social media app can be a “runaway train” of distressing videos because of how it selects content, the Star Tribune reports.
Gen Z, on the other hand, uses TikTok as more than just an entertainment consumption platform; they use it to communicate. It is a medium for video-based dialogue, it's used to express opinions and build communities of like-minded individuals.
