The second son of James and Margaret Dutton, Spencer was born some time after the family settled in Montana.
Jacob was nearly killed with multiple wounds to his chest and abdomen, and John was killed instantly with multiple gunshot wounds in the same region plus a fatal shot through his left eye. He left behind his widow, Emma and his son Jack.
He is the brother of John Sr. and Elsa, though Elsa died before Spencer was born. Spencer is the uncle of Jack and the nephew of Jacob and Cara.
Appearing as an old man in flashbacks of Yellowstone, John Dutton II is John III's (Kevin Costner) father, and presumably either John and Emma's second son or an older Jack Dutton.
Yellowstone fans know that Duttons have been buried in the same spot in Montana for over a century. The Dutton family cemetery makes more sense after 1883 revealed that Elsa was the first person to be buried on the land.
James and Margaret later had another son, Spencer, John's younger brother. Emma and John had a son, Jack. Another child, born some time after Jack's birth, died at a young age, which made Jack their only child.
Spencer Dutton
The younger brother of John Dutton Sr. (and the youngest child of 1883's James and Margaret Dutton, born after that show's conclusion) Spencer served in WWI and remains haunted by his experiences.
Spencer Dutton is the younger son of James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) from the 1883 series. He is also the younger brother of John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale). As James Dutton from 1883 was John Dutton's great-grandfather, this makes Spencer one of John's grandfathers.
Portrayed by
John Dutton Jr. Alexandra Dutton is a British woman whom Spencer Dutton meets while safari hunting in Africa and later became his wife.
Country superstar Tim McGraw stars as the patriarch from 1883, a Civil War soldier who leads his family West. He's married to Margaret, and they have three children: Elsa, Spencer, and John Dutton Sr.
Spencer had a deceased older sister named Elsa who died in either 1883 or 1884, and an older brother named John. His aunt Claire (the sister of his father), her husband Henry and their daughter Mary Abel all died before he was born. His brother John later worked for their uncle Jacob Dutton and aunt Cara.
'1923': Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford)
Jacob Dutton is the proprietor of the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch after the death of his younger brother, James Dutton (1883's Tim McGraw). Jacob becomes a father figure to James' sons, John and Spencer, and oversees the Dutton's legacy throughout Prohibition and the Great Depression.
Spencer is the son of James and Margaret Dutton, who you might remember from the prequel series, 1883, and he's the nephew of Jacob Dutton (played by Harrison Ford).
Claire Dutton was the sister of James Dutton. Claire and her daughter, Mary Abel, joined her brother, James, and the rest of his family in Fort Worth, Texas, after her husband, Henry, passed away.
Elsa was born on April 9, 1866 to James and Margaret Dutton, one year after the ending of the American Civil War. She is a farmer's daughter with a younger brother named John.
Claire Dutton is James Dutton's sister and Margaret Dutton's sister-in-law. She appears in the first two episodes of the show as the widow and mother of Mary Abel.
Peter Dutton
In Yellowstone season 5, John Dutton III reveals to his daughter-in-law, Monica, that he had a brother named Peter, who died only 18 hours after being born.
This patrilineal bloodline ends with Tate Dutton. (Jamie Dutton's child is, at least by name, also the youngest progeny of this family.) Tate also represents the seventh generation of Dutton, which is important. We'll explain that later.
The 1923 family tree suggests Spencer and Alex will become the parents of John Dutton's father. As James Dutton from 1883 was John Dutton's great-grandfather, this makes Spencer one of John's grandfathers. He is also the brother of John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale), who was killed off in a previous episode.
Garrett Randall, played by Will Patton, was Jamie Dutton's biological father and season four's major antagonist. Garrett Randall, a former ranch hand, was found guilty of murdering his wife when Jamie was a little kid.
Who does Brecken Merrill play on Yellowstone? Merill's big breakout came when he was cast as Tate Dutton, the son of Kayce Dutton and Monica and the grandson of ranch patriarch John Dutton. Tate is the youngest member of the Dutton clan and the only person in his generation on the Dutton family tree.
Lee may have initially been the favorite, but Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) was the prodigal son. John probably didn't react in the best way when he branded him with the Yellowstone 'Y' after Kayce told him that he was in love with a pregnant Monica Long (Kelsey Asbille), but time heals all wounds.
Apparently, Phyllis was a drug addict who did not care for the child. Thus, Garrett killed her so that James could be taken away from them and raised in a better family. Evelyn Dutton and John then adopted James, and he began living with the Duttons.
How many children does John Dutton have in Yellowstone? John and his wife Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) had three biological children together as well as an adopted son before her tragic death.
