Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (also known as Oswald the Rabbit or Oswald Rabbit or just plain Oswald) is an animated cartoon character created in 1927 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures.
1908 – Émile Cohl created Fantasmagorie — the first animated film using hand-drawn animation, and film historians consider it to be the first animated cartoon.
However, it is now generally acknowledged that the first ever popular fictional cartoon character was created in 1809 – more than a century before Mickey Mouse.
Bugs Bunny (11%) and Tom and Jerry (6%) were both created in 1940, and another popular choice, Road Runner (5%), was created in 1948. Besides the animators of the 1940s, it seems many Americans also have Warner Brothers Entertainment to thank for their favorite cartoons.
The debuts of other memorable Looney Tunes stars followed: Daffy Duck in Porky's Duck Hunt (1937), Elmer Fudd in the Merrie Melodies short Elmer's Candid Camera (1940), Bugs Bunny in the Merrie Melodies short A Wild Hare (1940), and Tweety in the Merrie Melodies short A Tale of Two Kitties (1942).
Personality and identity
Despite the perceptions that people may hold, owing to the long eyelashes and high-pitched voice (which Mel Blanc provided), Tweety is male although his ambiguity was played with.
1908 – Fantasmagorie, considered by animation historians as the world's first cartoon, is released.
01. Mickey Mouse. No one else deserves the top spot as much as this guy. Without Mickey Mouse and other characters from the classic Disney era, cartoons might've never become as big as they are today.
Bugs Bunny was first created in 1938 by Leon Schlesinger Productions – later known as Warner Bros. Cartoons. The popular rabbit was first named "Happy Rabbit," but renamed Bugs Bunny after his original writer, Ben "Bugs" Hardaway.
Before Mickey Mouse, there was his predecessor: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. For the first time, we're seeing footage of the first Disney character. The silent film in black and white dates back to 1928, when a young Walt Disney created Oswald.
Oswald who? It turns out the big-eared bunny was one of Walt Disney's first animated characters, a star in his own right before Mickey Mouse was even a gleam in his creator's eye. In the theatrical cartoons, Popeye was instead portrayed as being 40 years of age, as stated in the Fleischer cartoon Goonland (where Popeye says that his father left when he was born 40 years ago) and in the Famous cartoon The Ace of Space, in which a martian machine lists his age as being 40 as well.
The other two names are part of Daffy Duck's full name, Daffy Dumas Horacio Tiberius Armando Sheldon Duck. ( Who says commercial TV isn't educational? ) Donald Duck's explosive temper is likely behind his popularity.
To call someone “bugs” or refer to a person as “bugsy” was to call him crazy or unstable. Not a bad rap for a criminal looking to create a reputation for violence.
Tom and Jerry made their debut in the theatrical short Puss Gets the Boot (1940) and were a hit with audiences.
“Everybody shortens it to three fingers and a thumb... just simply for an economy of line. When you're having to animate 24 drawings per second, dropping one finger makes a huge difference," Marsh explained. They also had some advice for aspiring animators.
