The impact site, known as the Chicxulub crater, is centred on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Asteroid 2011 AG5 orbits the Sun once every 621 days. In 2040, it will have a close encounter with Earth, but it will ultimately fly safely past our planet at a distance of about 670,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers).
There was a small but definite risk, about one in 500, that its orbit, and Earth's, might coincide on 21 September 2030 - a danger that has been verified over the past 72 hours by a group of International Astronomical Union experts in Italy, Finland and the US.
