Disney Is Honoring Tiana, The First Black Disney Princess, With An Attraction.
It was Nov. 15, 2009, and the 10-year-old from Mississippi was walking the red carpet at the world premiere of Walt Disney's animated musical The Princess and the Frog. The fifth grader beat out hundreds of girls to land the gig voicing the young Tiana, Disney's first animated African American princess.
In Disney's nearly 100-year history, there has been only one Black Disney princess — Princess Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog,” a 2009 animated feature starring Anika Noni Rose.
But Tiana, Disney's first Black animated protagonist, would be onscreen for just about 40 minutes. More shockingly, she would be drawn as a Black woman for just 17 of those minutes. Most of the time, as you probably know, Tiana is a frog.
Despite the magnitude of Disney's global storytelling, in the 99-year history of the institution, there has been only one Black Disney Princess: Princess Tiana, who arrived on our screens in 2009 with the New Orleans-set tale The Princess and the Frog.
Giselle. Giselle is the only Disney princess to start out as an animated character and then transition over to live action in her movie. 'Enchanted' parodies many of the Disney princess tropes and Giselle herself is as sweet, kind and naive as Cinderella, Snow White and the rest.
The First Generation (1937-1959):
This period is the foundation of the 'Princess' genre as a whole. In this generation, Snow White (1937), Cinderella (1950), and Sleeping Beauty (1959) were created.
Although Moana is from the fictional island Motunui some 3,000 years ago, the story and culture of Moana is based on the very real heritage and history of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. In fact, once you start looking for ties to Polynesian culture in Moana, it's hard to stop!
It wasn't until 1968 that blacks were allowed into guest-facing jobs. Women and minorities are seen at all levels in the Disney Corporation. Here are three examples out of many: Meg Crofton is President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations U.S. and France.

What is “Disneyland jail”? Disneyland jail is a security office. Depending on where you are in the parks, you'll be taken to a different one – with the largest one being behind Main Street. There are no bars, no costumed characters…just security guards.
Wear a Costume as an Adult
Why? Well, a lot of costumes can make you look a whole lot like a character when you're exploring the parks, and Disney doesn't want guests and kids to confuse the real Disney characters in the parks with guests who are dressed up.
After making history as the first Black Disney princess in an animated movie, Tiana will be honored with a new “The Princess and the Frog” inspired-attraction that's coming to Disney World and Disneyland Resort.
It was unexpected, Elsa and Anna are both portrayed in the animated film as two Norwegian princesses from the 1840s — it's highly unlikely that their father, the King, was not white. I immediately looked over to my husband who had noticed the same thing I did. He shrugged at me.
