Thank you for subscribing! Air fryers are selling in their droves across the country as the cost of energy forces people to seek cheaper alternatives to heating their ovens up. They are becoming more popular as people are finding the kitchen appliance costs less in energy and are healthier than deep frying.
It offers a healthier alternative to deep-fat frying while still giving snacks like chips a crisp, 'fried' finish. Air fryers have been gaining popularity for years. First launched in 2010, the appliance has evolved and some models now feature functions like baking, roasting, and grilling.
Shoppers are ditching air fryers for alternative appliance that's just as healthy but cheaper. As rising inflation continues to put a strain on families across the country, seeking out ways to cut costs and lower bills has become prevalent. One area that has been popular when it comes to low-budget hacks is cooking.
Research shows that air fryers are more energy efficient than using an oven and that means savings on energy bills. They are healthier than deep frying or using an oil-soaked frying pan so there are some health benefits too.
The downside
Air-frying also produces high temperatures at a very rapid rate, thus making it extremely easy to burn food. And charred food may be carcinogenic. In addition, Cucuzza adds, because most devices cook 1 to 3 pounds of food at a time, it can be challenging to air-fry meals for a large family.
Air-frying equipment is not known to cause cancer, but the process of air frying does result in the formation of certain compounds, like acrylamide, that are linked to cancer development. Acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen.
A convection oven has the same advantages over an air fryer as a regular oven—size. If you're making multiple dishes or batches at once, a convection oven can help prepare it all at once.
The halogen oven
Halogen ovens work by halogen bulbs in the lid releasing infrared heat which is circulated around a glass bowl by fans. Like air fryers, halogen ovens help to save energy in your home, cutting down your electricity bills.
Professional chefs have been utilizing convection cooking—fine, air frying—to quickly cook everything from potatoes to roasted veggies and more for decades.
Air fryers themselves aren't a cause of cancer, but air frying does produce certain compounds such as acrylamide, which is considered a "probable" carcinogen. A carcinogen is a substance capable of causing cancer.
Air fryers don't use a lot of electricity, with most requiring between 800 and 1800 watts (W) to run, though some large models need more. Air fryers also use less electricity than electric ovens, which typically use around 2,200 W to 5,000 W, and therefore cost more to run.
The verdict. Generally, an air fryer is cheaper to use than the oven, but this is not always the case. An oven costs 21p to use on average and a 800W air fryer costs 13.6p to use. But if you own an air fryer that is a lot more powerful, you could be using near enough the same energy as an oven.
The pros are that air fryers are versatile, easy-to-use, and very quick allowing you to make healthier food efficiently in your own kitchen. Despite this, these rather large devices quickly take up space on your kitchen counter or in your cupboards and can be tricky to clean.
Air fryers circulate hot air around the food, while ovens direct heat at the food from at least one direction, sometimes two. So in terms of healthfulness, both methods are about the same.
Toasting bread in the air fryer is about as easy as it gets. Add the bread to the air fryer and cook at 390ºF until toasted to your liking. For me, this is around 4-5 minutes. Don't forget to flip halfway through for even toasting!
Acrylamide can be reduced by not cooking food at a too high temperature for too long. Consumers should aim for a golden yellow colour or lighter when frying (including air frying), baking, toasting or roasting food.
Arrange the sausages in a single layer in an air fryer basket. Set the air fryer to 180C and cook for 10-15 mins, turning every 5 mins, until the sausages are cooked through.
Are Air-Fried Foods Better for You? By most measures, air frying is healthier than frying in oil. It cuts calories by 70% to 80% and has a lot less fat. This cooking method might also cut down on some of the other harmful effects of oil frying.
According to their appliance expert, Samantha Cooper, “[air fryers] are loud … don't do anything significantly better than an oven … and they also require bumping your toaster and coffeemaker onto a storage shelf.”
Just as in a standard oven, it is perfectly safe to use aluminum foil in the air fryer.
Air fried potatoes are a healthier alternative to deep fried potatoes. They have almost the same roasted texture you'd get at a restaurant without the fat or calories that come from a batter or large amount of cooking oil. And you can feel GOOD about wating them.
