The Taliban believes in a strict interpretation of religious laws that can severely limit the human rights of its citizens, especially women. In the past, TV shows, music and movies were banned in Afghanistan by the Taliban and women weren't allowed to work, drive or go to school.
Since the Taliban's takeover in 2021, only girls aged 12 and under have been allowed to go to school. Afghanistan's schools have reopened for the new academic year, but hundreds of thousands of teenage girls remain barred from attending classes as Taliban authorities ban their attendance in secondary school.
The Taliban denied women and girls their right to education during their initial rule in the country between 1996 and 2001 and after seizing power for a second time in 2021, girls beyond puberty were again denied their right to education. Both times, the ban on girls' education was introduced as a temporary measure.
Women and girls have been banned from entering amusement parks, public baths, gyms and sports clubs for four months. Women have been banned from working in NGO offices. Since the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban in August 2021, women have been wholly excluded from public office and the judiciary.
Human Rights Watch said on Twitter that Afghanistan is the only country in the world that bans girls from going to secondary school. “Without educated girls and women, Afghanistan is facing a dark future,” HRW said.
Over three million girls, once enrolled in schools have been denied their right to education since the Taliban takeover, and their future in Afghanistan seems bleak according to a report.

According to Article 70 of the Civil Code of the Republic of Afghanistan 1977 and Article 99(1) of the Shiite Personal Status Law, the legal marriageable age is 16 for girls and 18 for boys. When a girl is below the age of 16, a marriage can be concluded with the permission of her father or a judge.
While Afghanistan is a deeply conservative, patriarchal country, it is not uncommon for women to drive in larger cities -- particularly Herat in the northwest, which has long been considered liberal by Afghan standards.
Most Afghans are Muslim and virtually all Afghan women wear a head covering based on the local interpretation of religious laws. Most women wear a hijab or chador as a covering. Some wear a chadari, better known in the West as burqa. In a few places like Kabul, Western dresses like jeans are often worn.
Taliban means “students” in Pashto (an official language of Afghanistan). When the group formed, most of its members were former students of Islamic religious schools. The Taliban is known for enforcing strict Islamic law and for its support of terrorism.

GIRLS' EDUCATION IS A DIVINE COMMAND
In Islam, education is a divine command for both men and women. The Quran as well as the hadith leave no doubt that women, like men, are obligated to increase their knowledge and pursue it.
The ban on sports is part of the Taliban's escalating campaign of restrictions that have shut down life for girls and women. Since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have barred girls from attending middle and high school.
Football in Afghanistan has traditionally been played by men as women were prevented from participating in sports. During the Islamic Republic era, a women's team was set up to promote the game. Even so many women experience prejudice for playing the sport during this period.
Education for girls was also banned during the previous era of Taliban rule in Afghanistan (1996-2001). In this period, too, girls attended secret schools. Not much was known about these schools during Taliban rule.
Cousin marriage, a form of consanguinity (marriages among couples who are related as second cousins or closer), is allowed and often encouraged throughout the Middle East, and in other Muslim countries worldwide such as Pakistan.

Afghanistan. The age of consent in Afghanistan is not defined, and the law only allows sexual activity between individuals who are married. This law effectively sets the age of consent at marriage, which is usually around 16 years old for girls and 18 years old for boys.
In fact, Pakistan has dramatically expanded enrollment for girls and boys in the last 14 years. Net enrollment for both has increased by roughly 10 percentage points (Figure 1). With a school-aged population of around 50 million children, there have been substantial gains in the number of children enrolled in school.

School life expectancy, primary and lower secondary, female (years) in Afghanistan was reported at 6.5134 years in 2018, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.
The country also has a longstanding history in literature, with poets such as Reza Mohammadi and Khaled Hosseini. Unfortunately, due to the spread of the Taliban regime and devastating wars, literacy rates in Afghanistan are among the lowest in the world at about 45 percent for men and 17 percent for women.
