During their journey, Maui tells Moana about his past. He says that he was abandoned by his parents and adopted by the gods. When Moana and Maui find Te Ka, a spirit risen due to the stealing of the heart of Te Fiti, they fail to get past her and Maui's hook is badly damaged. Upset and let down, Maui leaves Moana.
Maui refuses to return to Te Fiti as one more blow to his hook will destroy it forever. He uses some of his remaining power to transform into a hawk and leave Moana's boat. This forces Moana to return to Te Fiti alone. She faces Te Kā and is nearly killed, but Maui returns after having a change of heart.
A thousand years after Maui's disappearance, Tala's granddaughter, Moana, was chosen by the sea to find the demigod and have him join her in returning the heart to its rightful place. According to Moana's ancestors, Maui can be found by following a constellation resembling his fish hook.
Premiering in 2016 as Walt Disney Pictures' 56th feature film, Moana follows the bold title character as she leaves her Polynesian island of Motunui to return the magical heart to the goddess Te Fiti in order to restore balance to nature.
She eventually makes friends with Maui but their relationship is never romantic. Even though Moana is promised to become the island's new chief one day, she doesn't have to do it with a husband in tow.
According to the Los Angeles Times, when an attendee asked how titular character Moana would be different from previous Disney princesses, co-director John Musker had a simple but powerful response: "There will be no romance in the movie."
Moana isn't the first princess not to have a love interest. Princess Merida from Brave also didn't have one. The story was all about her not wanting go through with an arranged marriage and her relationship with her mother, and that movie was AMAZING.
According to Maui, they took one look at him after his birth and decided they didn't want him as they refuse to bear the difficulties of raising a child. As such, they threw him into the ocean like he was nothing, though he was saved by the gods, who raised him to become a demigod to provide gifts for humanity.
Although Moana's relationship with Maui never extends beyond the platonic level in the film, and although he is a 1,000-year old demigod and she is a 16-year old human, a lot of fans of the film like to put her and Maui in a romantic pairing known as Hooked Wayfinder.
Although Moana is from the fictional island Motunui some 3,000 years ago, the story and culture of Moana is based on the very real heritage and history of Polynesian islands such as Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. In fact, once you start looking for ties to Polynesian culture in Moana, it's hard to stop!
A millennium later, Moana, daughter of Motunui's chief Tui, is chosen by the ocean to return the heart to Te Fiti. However, Tui arrives and takes Moana away, causing her to lose the heart. Tui and Moana's mother, Sina, try to keep her away from the ocean to prepare her for ascension as the island's chief.
Maui is not Moana's father. Her father is Cheif Tui, the leader of the village of Motunui.
Is Maui Moana's boyfriend? But it's great to see that their relationship never even touches the possibility of romance. Instead, their bond is one first of adversaries, then one of comrades working together on a team. They face their own ups and downs, but Maui remains Moana's friend through it all.
These experts formed the film's Oceanic Story Trust, and it was members of this group who pushed the filmmakers for a bigger Maui. “They were telling us that he needs to be a hero, almost like Superman,” Mr. Pimentel said.
Grandma Tala is the first voice we hear passing down the story of how the world came to be, created by nature. She later tells Moana she was there the day the Ocean chose her to carry out the journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti.
Lilo descended from Moana.
Considering that Lilo lives in the same region as Moana once did, it is quite possible that Lilo descended from the ancient hero. If this theory is true, as many people have already claimed, then it would make sense for Maui to take the form of a fish to visit Lilo regularly.
Moana's journey is unique to other Disney princesses because she goes on her journey for her family and her people, instead of trying to impress a man. Unlike most Disney movies, the end of the movie does not contain a happily ever after marriage.
While the ages of Disney Princesses are rarely discussed in their respective movies, Moana's age is given as 16, and the movie doesn't try to hide the fact that she is still quite young.
