Breast milk can turn into a pinkish color due to colonization by Serratia marcescens, a species of rod-shaped gram-negative bacteria that produce a reddish-orange tripyrrole pigment called prodigiosin1 that has been related to a variety of diseases and even newborn deaths.
Pink, Red, or Rust
You may have a small amount of blood in your breast milk. Don't panic! Having blood in your breast milk is typically caused by a rupture in a blood capillary or cracked nipples, and is not harmful to your baby.
In most cases, it's safe or even helpful to continue breastfeeding if you see blood in your breast milk. This can sometimes be a sign of health problems for the mother, but it's not dangerous for babies. Some mothers find that blood in the breast milk causes babies to spit up more, but this is rarely cause for concern.
You may be alarmed to find that you've suddenly pumped “strawberry milk” for your baby. Red or pink breast milk usually indicates that some blood has mixed in with the milk. According to RN and IBCLC lactation consultant Shantel Harlin, “Generally, blood in breast milk is not a contraindication for feeding your baby.
“Pink milk caused by small amounts of blood is considered safe for babies to consume. It takes only a tiny amount of blood to make breast milk pink, and most babies digest this easily.
Pink or brown breast milk
A breast infection called mastitis or, much more rarely, breast cancer can sometimes lead to pink or brown milk too.
Vascular engorgement
This results from an increase in blood flow to the breasts shortly after giving birth. Your first milk or colostrum may have a rusty, orange, or pinkish color. There is no specific treatment for vascular engorgement. The bleeding usually disappears within a week of giving birth.
Since foremilk is thin, it tends to look clear or bluish. 4 Hindmilk: As you continue to pump or breastfeed, the fat content in your milk goes up. As the fat increases, breast milk turns into creamier milk called hindmilk. Hindmilk has a thicker white or yellow appearance.
A color that's normal for one mother might not be normal for another — so you shouldn't necessarily go out and compare color notes with all your breastfeeding friends. But in most cases, breast milk is lighter in appearance, usually white, although it can have a slightly yellowish or bluish hue.
One of the most amazing and little-studied phenomenon shared on social media is the a change in breastmilk appearance when an infant is ill. Mothers who express milk notice that their milk might have a deeper yellow appearance when their infants are ill.
Some detect a “sour” or “spoiled” odor or taste. Accompanying these changes are concerns that the milk is no longer good for the baby. In addition, while sometimes the baby doesn't seem to care and drinks a bottle of the expressed milk readily, other times the baby refuses to drink the milk.
Yellow is the first color of breast milk mom will see, due to the fact it is colostrum-rich, containing many of the antibodies needed to protect newborns against disease. Concentrated levels of white blood cells, leukocytes, and Immunoglobulin A can also cause this rich, buttery appearance.
"There is a wide range of normal when it comes to color for breast milk," says Hali Shields, a certified birth and postpartum doula, national board-certified health and wellness coach, and certified lactation education counselor. "Blueish, yellow, cream, orange are all normal and safe for baby."
Let's start with #1: shaking denatures proteins. There are many, many different types of proteins in human milk and these are highly variable in size.
Safety is priority number one, of course, but convenience isn't far behind which leads to the question: Can you pump breast milk into the same bottle all day? “[You] can absolutely keep adding to the same bottle within that day's time,” says Ashley Georgakapoulos, Motif Medical's lactation director.
Once your mature milk has come in, be sure to pump for at least 20 – 30 minutes per session (or until you no longer see milk expressing from your breasts). It's typically easier to tell when you're done with a nursing session – after all, your little one simply detaches and stops eating!
But the mastitis may also include other signs, like these: Flu-like symptoms like fever, chills, body aches, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue. Yellowish discharge from the nipple that looks like colostrum. Breasts that feel tender, warm, or hot to the touch and appear pink or red.
There are basically two reasons that a mother's milk is red. Sometimes a small rupture in a blood capillary in the nipple or the breast may turn milk pink. The second reason is a bacterium called Serratia marsescens. With blood, there's not much you can do about its presence in milk except ignore it.
Opt for protein-rich foods, such as lean meat, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils and seafood low in mercury. Choose a variety of whole grains as well as fruits and vegetables. Eating a variety of foods while breastfeeding will change the flavor of your breast milk.
Colostrum is thick, has a golden color, and serves a valuable purpose. It provides just the right nourishment to get a newborn off to a healthy start. According to La Leche League International, colostrum is produced during pregnancy and for a few days after childbirth.
The longer the time between feeds, the more diluted the leftover milk becomes. This 'watery' milk has a higher lactose content and less fat than the milk stored in the milk-making cells higher up in your breast.
A newborn should be put to the breast at least every 2 to 3 hours and nurse for 10 to 15 minutes on each side. But rather than worry about duration, it's important to know that the best way to ensure that the baby is getting enough breast milk is by feeding frequency, wet and dirty diapers, and weight gain.
