On his deathbed, Viserys dreamt of one of his heirs wearing the Conqueror's Crown—the crown that once belonged to Aegon. By naming her first born
Aegon was named by his mother after Aegon the Conqueror. He would have three younger siblings: two brothers, Aemond and Daeron, and a sister, Helaena. Although King Viserys now had three sons, he refused to alter the succession and kept Rhaenyra as his heir, a decision he left in his will.
Queen Alicent was not the first to name her child after Aegon. This name is reserved for any of Aegon the Conqueror's male descendants; making it perfectly acceptable for Rhaenyra to name her son the same. To avoid confusion, people will refer to them as Aegon the Elder and Aegon the Younger.
Aegon being given the Conqueror's crown, as well as his Valyrian steel sword, Blackfyre, is an effort to further cement his own legitimacy: it's a connection to the person who established the entire Targaryen family dynasty in Westeros and united the Seven Kingdoms under one rule that Rhaenyra simply cannot match.
The main reason is almost certainly that the founder of the Targaryen dynasty in mainland Westeros was named Aegon and the name was repeated in the family as an honorific, a reminder of the first Aegon's greatness and/or an attempt to “recapture” said greatness.
Youth. Aegon was born towards the end of 120 AC to Prince Daemon Targaryen and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Aegon was named after the first Targaryen king, Aegon the Conqueror.
Both the first and last major Targaryens in Westeros are named Aegon Targaryen, with many kings giving this moniker to their heirs in hopes of bringing more greatness upon their house. House of the Dragon's reveal of Aegon the Conqueror's Song of Ice...
Rhaenyra Targaryen, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, briefly considered bending the knee to her half-brother King Aegon II in the Season 1 finale of House of the Dragon, thus sparing the citizens of Westeros years of dragon fire and bloodshed.
Later, when Rhaenyra marries her uncle Daemon, Aegon was about 13 years old and becomes deeply offended (as his mother) when his sister names a son also as Aegon. Aegon II marries his sister, Haelaena and they have three children: Jaehaerys and Jaeharera (twins), and Maelor.
The enmity between Queen Alicent and Princess Rhaenyra was passed on to their children; Aegon and his brothers did not get along with their Velaryon nephews, and resented the three boys for having stolen their "birthright", the Iron Throne itself.
Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones is a distant descendent of Rhaenyra Targaryen, who she has been compared to in House of the Dragon.
In The World of Ice & Fire it is revealed that Aegon loved Rhaenys the most out of his sisters, spending ten nights with her for every one that he spent with Visenya. However, while Rhaenys was indeed the gentler of the two sisters, she was still a fierce warrior in her own right.
Rhaenyra was a dragonrider whose mount was Syrax. Her claim to the Iron Throne was challenged by her younger half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen, sparking the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. She was the mother of two kings, Aegon III and Viserys II.
He was named after his father's favorite knight and companion, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth.
Aegon was named after the Conqueror while Viserys was named after Rhaenyra's father and Daemon's brother, with both paying tribute to important figures in their parents' lives and history.
Visenya Targaryen
In what perhaps should've been accompanied by a warning for viewers, Rhaenyra has a stillborn daughter upon learning the news of her father's death and the subsequent coronation of Aegon II. The daughter was to be named Visenya, after one of Aegon the Conqueror's sister-wives.
Following the news that Aemond killed Rhaenyra's son Lucerys Velaryon, Daemon declares that he will avenge his stepson's death: “A son for a son.” While Daemon has committed heinous crimes before in House of the Dragon, none were as agonizing as sanctioning the assassination of Aegon and Helaena's six-year-old son.
In the book, she's nine years older than Princess Rhaenyra, but in Dragon they're meant to be around the same age: 15 years old as of episode 1, then roughly 17 or 18 during episodes 3-5.
Rhaenyra Targaryen is disliked for many reasons, but the primary reasons for why she is hated is because she didn't act like a woman, and because her actions are believed to have caused much chaos in Westeros. We have to remember that in Westeros, history is written by the Maesters, and their histories are biased.
That's right, during the Oct. 2 episode of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith) stopped fighting their feelings for one another and finally got together. However, this was more than just an illicit liaison, as Rhaenyra and Daemon got married at the end of the episode.
With both Rhaenyra and Aegon gone, there's one clear person to inherit the throne: Rhaenyra's son Aegon, known as “Aegon the younger” in the books (her older sons had all died by this point).
Aegon had married both women before he took over Westeros. Therefore, by the time Aegon ascended the throne, the High Septon could not do much to oppose it. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, would have to wed two men while already in a position of power and in the public eye.
Technically, Rhaenyra is Daenerys's sixth great grandmother and Jon's seventh great grandmother. That also makes Daenerys and Jon the direct descendants of Daemon, Rhaenyra's uncle/second husband.
Viserra Targaryen was described as the most beautiful of Jaehaerys and Alysanne's six daughters who lived to adulthood, and was regarded as a "goddess" by some of the boys who met her.
9 Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen Is Jon Snow's Seventh Great-Grandmother. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is one of the most important characters in House of the Dragon. After her uncle Daemon was banished from King's Landing, Rhaenyra was named heir to the Iron Throne by her father.
