When Shelby has given birth, she decides to have her long hair cut off “to make things as simple as possible”. But when she sees herself in the mirror without her long locks, she starts to cry, knowing she has left behind part of her pre-motherhood self and must now be sensible, with a sensible hair-do to match.
Over the course of the story, we learn that Shelby's greatest desire in life is to be a mother and, despite warnings not to get pregnant, she has a baby and goes into kidney failure. And guess what, you guys. SHE DIES TOO.
Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah studied hair stylists so their hair styling scenes would look authentic -- a particular necessity in the first beauty shop scene, during the course of which Parton styles Julia Roberts' hair for her wedding.

This is perhaps the most important life lesson of all and one of the hardest to remember.

'Steel Magnolias' was based on a true story
Actor and writer Robert Harling wrote the play based on the true story of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson, who died from complications with diabetes.
