Viserys wanted a son with Aemma because he didn't want Daemon as his heir. When Aemma died, he wanted her child to inherit the throne, not Daemon. He believed Rhaenyra would be a good queen who could handle any disparity about her gender. He figured that Daemon would be more helpful from afar as in not at court.
While Daemon called himself the "Prince of the City", he became known as "Lord Flea Bottom" among the residents of King's Landing. Daemon considered himself his brother's heir as Viserys had no living sons, and he coveted the title Prince of Dragonstone, which the king refused to grant.
Daemon had said that Viserys' dead son was “heir for a day.” Hearing this really put the nail in the coffin for Daemon to win over Viserys in being named the heir. King Viserys clearly had enough of his brother and felt very comfortable naming his daughter the heir to the throne.
Putting Rhaenyra as his heir is his penance for what happened. After the graphic House of the Dragon episode 1 birth scene, Hess' comments prove that Viserys is desperate to make up for his hand in his wife's demise, which may be a small comfort to viewers.
Frankly, Viserys didn't tell Daemon about Aegon's dream because he didn't trust him with it or believe he would give it the dedication it required. It's part of why Viserys never made Daemon his Hand or his heir, as Daemon was far more concerned with personal ambition than his duty to the realm and humanity.
His legendary ancestor, King Aegon the Conqueror, had a vision that the world of men would fall, and understood that only his family of Aryan inbreds could save it. Viserys tells his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, that Aegon “foresaw the end of the world of men.
Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) finally had sex on House of the Dragon. After teasing their deep connection for weeks, making out in a brothel, and flirting their way through King's Landing, uncle and niece at long last did the dirty.
At this point, Viserys, who is drugged on milk of the poppy only replies to Rhaenyra by calling her his only child. It's a tough look considering he has three other children with Alicent, but it's clear that, in many ways, Rhaenyra has always been his favorite child and the one he is closest with.
Viserys And Rhaenyra
His love for his daughter was more powerful than the love he had for any of his other children, and he seemed to truly want little more than to see her happy. Likewise, she found comfort in following his will, making the first move toward peace with Alicent when he asked for it.
Their son, too, dies. Viserys is left with no obvious heir and eventually decides to name Rhaenyra as the next in line for the throne. However, by the second episode of the show, Viserys has remarried Alicent Hightower, and together they produce a son, Aegon II Targaryen.
But, while time may heal all wounds, 10 years certainly wasn't enough time for Alicent's wounds to heal over being lied to by Rhaenyra. We last saw her find out the truth in "We Light the Way" that Rhaenyra lost her virginity to Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel).
While House Of The Dragon episode 4 showed Daemon was able to seduce Rhaenyra by kissing and undressing her, he couldn't fulfill the act due to impotence.
After her victory, she became known as 'The Black', or 'The Black Queen', both for the name of her faction, and for her wrath towards those that had opposed her. All modern Targaryens can trace heritage to Rhaenyra, through either her son Aegon or her son Viserys.
The war ended when Aegon II died in 131 AC with no male issue, and was succeeded by Rhaenyra's and Daemon's elder son, the boy Aegon III, who had seen his mother's death by dragon.
In one of the scenes, Daemon is shown choking his wife, also the protagonist, Rhaenyra. Talking about the scene, Emma D'Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, attributed Daemon's violence to grief over Viserys' death. Emma D'Arcy stated that they knew that the scene would mark a significant shift in their relationship.
Nonetheless, the exiled Viserys declared his sister Daenerys his heir, naming her Princess of Dragonstone, and following Viserys's death, Daenerys has declared her own claim for the Iron Throne.
Laena died early in 120 AC. It is said that Laena attempted to reach Vhagar in her final hour as to fly one last time, but she did not have the strength. Following Laena's funeral on Driftmark, the ten-year old prince Aemond Targaryen claimed Vhagar as his own dragon.
The show has got the speed of the disease correct. King Viserys has lived with leprosy for many decades and the disease has grown very slowly.
Ser Criston Cole, we have to understand, was never a good guy. He wasn't an honorable knight who went over to the dark side. He merely wore a chivalrous façade. He didn't want Rhaenyra to run away with him because he loved her despite his claims to marry “for love.” Nor was he heartbroken over her refusal.
Viserys' final words in the text are, “Then the storm broke, and the dragons danced.” This was represented in the episode very artfully. A storm was present, and it picked up as Viserys was dying. The Catspaw dagger begins to hum, a weapon that symbolizes Aegon's prophecy and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
After the assassination plot against Laenor Velaryon, which led to the widespread belief that he had been killed (though a brief scene at the end of "Driftmark" reveals that he and his romantic partner, Ser Qarl, have fled Westeros), Princess Rhaenra married her uncle Daemon, and they have had two children, Aegon III ...
It sounds like Viserys is telling Alicent she is "the one" to ensure this will happen; that the "Prince That Was Promised" comes from her line. This isn't the case, though: Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra.
Daemon strangled Rhaenyra because he felt betrayed by Viserys. “It's a moment that I think is surprising and shocking for Daemon as a character, but I also think it's one of those things that's been set up over the course of the entire season.
Prosthetic designer confirms: the baby was deformed
The dead girl had been named Visenya. “ The baby was clearly among those rare cases in the Targaryen line, where it was described that an unsuccessful birth had produced a stillborn baby with dragon-like features.
“Ultimately, his impotence in this scene is a reflection of the fact that he knows deep down what he's doing isn't right,” House of the Dragon executive producer and showrunner Miguel Sapochnik said.
